Hello, i am a complete newbie in the flashlight world, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. i am a plant engineer who has to sometimes look at machinery in dark areas or be in very poorly lit rooms flashing a light trying to see something 30 feet away or under/inside a machine flashing at something 1 feet away, or other everyday general stuff. i will use the flashlight for about 10-30 mins a week so battery life is not a big deal, i can replace them as needed. i am looking to purchase a flashlight and was about to buy the maglite XL50 today but decided to read on this forum for other options. The XL50 form factor is really nice but i wish it had a clip or a holster because it seems like it will fall out of my shirt or pant pockets every time i will bend down or sit down.
1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?: In store or online. USA
2) Budget: Less than $30. maybe i can stretch $10 bucks more (not sure what the company will reimburse)
3) Format: flashlight
4) Flashlight-specific format/size: Every day carry small (2-4 inches)
5) Emitter/Light source: I don't know.
6) Manufacturer: I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
7) What battery type do you want to use? alkaline batteries (AAA or AA) or rechargeable nickel chemistry (NiCad, NiMH, NiZn). I will probably not use these (CR123, CR2, Energizer Advanced/Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA) (rechargeable Li-on)
8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).
i want a high and low setting. upto 200 lumen high would be enough (i think??)
9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light?: 0-10 yards (i think??)
10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).
Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase “you get what you pay for” is very accurate for flashlights.
12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply): I don’t know.
13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection: I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
14)Material/Finish/Coating: I don’t care.
15) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any below.
____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____“Hybrid” light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
_would be nice but not necessary___Pocket/belt clip
_would be nice but not necessary___Holster
_would be nice but not necessary___Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments
