/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gifHi guys,
Newbie need help. Anybody can help me with info about EL wire ? What do you call thin EL wire, EL tape or ribbon ? How to make display with this thin EL ? Where to get them ? Any website explaining EL know how ? Thanks guys

zIf you're in the U.S., look for a CompUSA. They have EL mod'ding kits for PCs which run off of 12v from a power supply connector inside. I've seen both EL wire and flat tape in their kits.

I picked up several sets of purple 5' pieces with inverters (for automotive use) on clearance from target a while ago. 4.99 Cant' beat it. And if you are carefull, you can 'peel' off the colored outer coating and get a thinner wire that lights up lt. blue.

Acoording to the guy at:

http://www.thatscoolwire.com/

the wire comes in .09, 2.3, and 4.0 millimeters thick. He also rates them as to relative and absolute brightness.

My understanding is that the EL wire has a metal core, a plastic jacket, and more metal wires close but not touching the core. You run an AC current through it and the plastic glows. Don't know if you'd consider it a sort of capacitor or what. The wire does have a life expectency Sunlight will fade it and it slowly wears out with use. Running it harder will wear it out faster. It's life expectancy can probably be measured in thousands of hours of run time.

If you happen to have access to 277 volt AC current I can give you a green EL panel about 8x10" By daylight it just looks like a bright green piece of plastic. At night it is about as bright per square inch as a cyalume stick.

So far as making displays, the only real limit is your own talent. You can bend it like fishline, run it underwater, glue it, tie it, staple it, put it in your car, power it off a battery pack and walk around wearing it, etc.

Ups. Sorry, put it in wrong tread. Thank you for your help guys.

I bought a small 12ft kit from pep boys. It uses a cars 12 volt cig plug. Its fairly bright, maybe not able to see in sunlight. I believe from the website you can get way longer than a few feet.

There's good information, prices, and service at one at:
http://www.coolneon.com
http://www.coolight.com

The original developer/manufacturer is in Israel:
http://www.elam-lytec.com/
But apparently there are some clone products now.

It runs off of about 110VRMS (300+V P-P) at 400Hz to 9kHz or
so AC, so the special purpose inverter chips for "indiglo"
watches and the like tend not to work very well (they produce
more like 80-150V P-P at 400Hz) Fortunately, there are a lot
of reasonably low priced inverters from the dealers...

I've seen indoor ad panel using thin el (maybe 0.2 mm)in colours flashing in sequence forward and backward. Just like they make for badge or T shirt. I wonder how they make this panel. Looks cool if u can make with your own idea.
