Hi,

I was curious of the initial self discharge rate of the newer 1500 cycle eneloop. And as nobody seemed to know I ran a test of my own.

This test was performed using a MAHA MH-C9000 charger and 16 new AA Eneloop batteries. All batteries had been through several charge/discharge cycles including one break-in cycle on the C9000. All batteries went through exactly the same number/type of cycles (6 total before this test).

For the test I charged the batteries in the C9000 using a break-in cycle, but with 1800 charge setting (instead of 2000). I then recorded the capacity reported from the break-in. I then discharged 1 battery every 2 days at 400 mA rate and recorded the capacity. So first battery was discharged after 2 days. last one was discharged after 32 days...

Results:

1996 1880 -86 95.6% -4.4%
1973 1850 -123 93.8% -6.2%
1998 1867 -131 93.4% -6.6%
1997 1850 -147 92.6% -7.4%
1977 1831 -146 92.6% -7.4%
1980 1815 -165 91.7% -8.3%
1993 1830 -163 91.8% -8.2%
1982 1804 -178 91.0% -9.0%
1974 1813 -161 91.8% -8.2%
1984 1809 -175 91.2% -8.8%
1988 1818 -170 91.4% -8.6%
2000 1815 -185 90.8% -9.3%
1969 1785 -184 90.7% -9.3%
1988 1789 -199 90.0% -10.0%
2012 1819 -193 90.4% -9.6%
2013 1809 -204 89.9% -10.1%

So when charge this full, the eneloops discharge quit fast the first few days. Then slow down.
about -7% after 1 week, -8+% after 2 weeks, and around 10% after a full month.

This put the batteries at about 95% of 1900 after the first month. (1900 mAh is the minium rating for the battery and what Sanyo uses for it's self discharge ratings).

So it seems to me that if your eneloops sit around for a week or more after being charged (either not in a device, or in a device but not being used) they are going to have less then 1900 mAh regardless to how full they were when charged. This is pretty typical for me (and the reson I did this test).

Not sure what other can get from this, but ther it is...
