Preface:
ive had the 3-LED tri-clops energiser headlamp for some time and its stood up well to the construction environment outside a hardhat in the dust and dark.
its only ever let me down at 4 am when the power was out and floodwaters were backing up my driveway at 4am and i was bailing with a bucket and the batteries (third set in 2 years) quit.
totally and completely my fault.
battery life - A (allmost an A+)
real world durability- a+ still perfect today.
very sure i couldnt hurt it unless outright i abused it wrecklessly.
and i have showed it no mercy. heavy rain resistant from my trials.
not waterproof, but fights the good fight.
usability - C+ (stock config)
lenses for the single red and dual spot were long beams.
sanded down the lenses for the real headlamp work (had my fenix l2d on my hip for long range) and then once i modified it and only once i modified it
well, it became an A-
close up workhorse and true headlamp fulfillment.
now energiser has a luxeon/cree headlamp out now - dont be fooled by the top-of-the-line-gimmick.
the 6led is the real deal and the blaster is a long range - but its low runtime is a cheat for anyone with a real flashlight with some range.
Begin write up:
* this is why i spent my $12 at lowes on the best all around. *
instead of a single red its a dual. (70-75 some odd hours?)
*** youll use this when the power is out or you are in a runtime crisis you dont see your way out of)***
push the manual clicky again and its:
SPOT for 50 hours (like the triclops - but dont sand those bugeye lenses down like you would there)
***you will rarely use this because you have a real flashlight NOT meant for arms reach floodlight work. - like a luxeon or cree - but its a good backup****
push the manual clicky again and its FLOOD for 50 hours
*** youll live here when you arent in the red***
(DO sand those lenses down along with the reds while youre at it both are too "spotty" for arms reach work - meaning red and flood)
next WHITE COMBO quad! flood and spot!
***alert alert! major crisis 20 hours runtime - youll only use this 1 to 5 % of the time when it really counts, but you got it if you need it***
+all runtimes are from packaging supposedly with the included 3AAA energiser alkalines.
PS
quality seems 10% less than the "triclops" a touch more bulky, a touch more flimsy, and a touch less waterproof by visual analysis. havnt put the new unit to the test yet.
all in all, tradeoffs abound - but for what the darned thing is... and for 12 bucks its an improvement... if not - my old energiser triclops is still kickin and its up to the job.
-just gotta get more rechargable AAA's. i need 6 if not 12 now.
(and yes the 3 battery is a pain if your charger does double or quad)
i would avoid the grandmaster/premium spot because of the runtime and gimmicry. a high powered spot on the head with 3 AAA batteries is a fools errand and i would never pay for it. lux/cree? NOPE not on my head.
