Does anyone know the capacity of AAA and AA Energizer e2 batteries compared to regular alkalines? I don't mean the e2 Lithium, just the e2 Titanium. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

AA: 3135mAh
AAA: 1375mAh

These figures, according to the page, show power produced with a 25mA drain and 0.8V cutoff. Naturally, with a higher drain, you would expect internal resistance to heat the battery up, increasing the resistance and reducing the actual amount of power you can extract.

How does it compare in real world? I'm not really the man to answer that. But I tend to stick with Duracell M2 and Energizer e2 when I'm using them in small high-drain devices. The generic alkalines don't do so well. The standard Duracell and Energizer alkalines seem almost as good, but have too little price difference to bother with.

You mean M3, right? At first, I thought the M3 might have been some sort of technical term proprietary to Duracell. It actually means More fuel, More efficiency and More power. M3. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif Marketing crap.

I don't think the slightly higher capacity of E2s or M3s are worth the higher cost, unless there is a deal or sale.

The difference is about 50cents to a dollar here, depending on where you get them. That's for a pack of 8. So it doesn't make too much difference for me, especially since I don't use disposables except for a few daily-carry items. Even then, I prefer to use lithiums where possible. So nowadays, I hardly ever buy alkalines anymore.
 
I read on a website (can't find it now) where a test was run comparing the Titaniums vs regular alkalines. Their result was aproximately a 10% increase in runtime with a 50% increase in cost.......
 
Slightly off topic, but:
Anybody else wonder why there's always "mah" ratings on NiMHs or NiCads, but none on alkalines or zinc-carbs or even lithiums...?

To an average customer who has no idea about the chemistry differences and behaviors of batteries, they'd always go for higher mah ratings (that is, if they even read the labels first, and trust it at that)... Wierd as this would work in batt manufacturer's favor anyways...

I believe the reason lies in marketing. And to hide the true to customers, in this case the low efficiency of their batteries.
An Energizer AA NiMH gives 1850 mAh of energy. The test period is five hours at 20 Celsius, it means that it will power a load with 370 mA for five hours. It will NOT provide 1850 mA for one hour, but about 80% of that; it means that will give 1850 mA for 50 minutes. Much better than SLA, which capacity is specified for 20 hours; for one hour they derate to 60%.
An alkaline AA has a specified capacity of about 3000 mA, but... only if discharged at 20 (twenty) mA. It will provide 20 mA for 150 hours. It can provide 1,5 Amp to the load for 1 hour. This happen because the original spec, devided in 1960 for zinc carbon, have never changed.
Think of a lithium e2 from Energizer. It has a capacity of 3000 mAh, same as an alkaline AA, but it is specified at 200 (two hundred) mA load. It will provide 200 mA for 15 hours to the load. Or can provide 1,5 Amp to the load for two hours.
I did a test. with a 50 mA load, an alkaline AA lasts 30 hours. With the same load, an e2 lithium lasts more than the double. I used a PT Matrix LED head and a data logger (a/d converter to the serial port of my DOS PC).
So, the capacity of alkalines and lithium is not correctly reported, otherwise manufacturers may step on their own foot. You can find all the numbers on NIMH, alkaline and lithiums I said on the energizer data site. FOr SLA, check the Hawker site.
