Epsilon ED-P72 Review (Pics, Comparisons, Beamshots, Impressions)

Hi Everyone,

Up for review is the Epsilon ED-P72.
NOTE: This light is one of the flawed ano lights that Epsilon is selling.

Here are some of the specs from Episilon's sale thread for the ED-P72

  • SSC P7 W724C0 LED
  • 2x18650
  • 4 Modes: 100/30/10/strobe
  • HA III anodization
  • 350g without battery
  • 3A to LED
  • 85 Minutes on 100%

More information can be found in the threads linked below.

This light was supplied by Epsilon for review, it can also be purchased here. with flawed anodization.. hmm.. for 79$

A Bit of Background:
The light was first introduced by the company, "minglight" on 10/9/08, here, quite a bit of time afterwards, they introduced the smaller version, the ED-P71, which uses just 1 18650 battery.
Their preorder thread is here. According to the manufacturer, minglight is no longer a distributor, beware! post is here. The manufacturer decided to directly offer the flawed anodization lights for sale at a discount here.

no more delay! people want to see a flashlight! not some history of one ;)

just a pic of the box, nothing to see here. I didn't take a picture of the inside because its just filled with bubble wrap and light parts.

here we are with the light.. nice and sturdy with an anti roll ring.. it doesnt appear to be big enough, as my light rolls away from me regardless.
note: I reviewed 2 types of tailcaps with my shipment. 1 you can see in all the pictures here, and one you can see in the P72 thread. the less knurled cap seems to perform erratically, so I didn't use it.

The crenelations on the bezel are physically sharp! A pro, or a con for some people o_O

IMG_8165_processed.jpg

some dents and missing ano

IMG_8168_processed.jpg

another dent and missing ano, looks like this happened after product. accidental drop?

here is the light with the P71 body tube and led module. I could not get this setup working.

double o-ring goodness :) The threads except for the tailcap came unlubed, so I relubed it with No-Ox-ID, found here.

single oring here.. strange, it looks like there is a groove for another one

sharp edges!

Comparison:
IMG_8173_processed.jpg

From left to right: A maglite 3D , a tiablo ACE-G, Epsilcon ED-P72, Solarforce L950m, MG RX-1 MC-E, Eagletac M2XC4, Fenix LD01, Solarforce 18650, AA, AAA, 4Sevens CR123A

First Impressions:
The cheap price is from the lightly damaged ano.. I'll say its a good tradeoff. :)
Now, disregarding that for now, I'd like to say, "wow!".. another super high output light, cheap, with a very good design and beam. the light is very comfortable in hand, but the tailcap seems a bit annoying. due to the design, you have to hold the light a specific way for easy activation of the light. this, though, allows the light to tailstand.. a good tradeoff, I guess.
The double o-ring sometimes get caught in the threading when putting on the cap.. you should be aware as this probably compromises waterproof-ness.
The light is nice and hefty, while not being too big. reflector is slightly bigger than the tiablo ACE-G's, but smaller than the solarforce L950m, quite a bit of spill for its size.

Conclusion:
If you look past the flawed ano, this is a really good deal. It has nicely spaced modes, though medium and high are a bit close.. the light uses PWM to dim at a decently high frequency.. "strobing" is less noticeable than a few of my DX lights.
The actual sharp crenelations would make this light a pretty effective weapon if need be, otherwise, it may be a hazards to users. Heatsinking, and design are well done.

More coming soon.

haha, I have smaller lights, but a comparison to other big lights is fitting :)
