Hi...new here..learned a lot so far about my Scorpion and those jazzy E2Es, but am curious, I've owned those little squeeze LED lights you buy for 10 bucks and love 'em on my key chain...but in your forum I notice they make LED lights in large sizes..what is the difference over a standard light, like my Scorpion?

There are 2 basic types of LEDs now: Nichia and Luxeon Star (LS). The one you are familiar with, is the Nichia. With these, you gang them into arrays for increased brightness, though you don't get much throw. You get more from your batteries, as they operate below the cutoff voltages of incandescant bulbs.

One 1 watt LS equals 10-15 Nichias in brightness and still makes batter use of batteries than incandescants. LSes come in 3 flavors: low dome, high dome, and side emitter. The latter 2 are suitable for use with reflectors to obtain the throw that incandescants are known for.

The other point of white LEDs is that you get white, not yellowish light.

LSes still have color problems, but it is getting better.

If you want a superior LS based light, get the Arc LS, from Arc Flashlight. (see the Arc Flashllight forum for more info). THese have the advantage of being to use not only 123s, but AA alkaline and AA Lithiums as well. (1 x 123 or 2 x AA). The owner of Arc Flashight handpicks the LSes that go into the lights.

LEDs have a longer life than incandescent lights by miles...usually. They generally are more efficient than incandescent lights. Many people find the light they produce very helpful in that many LED lights have such an excellent quality of light that the objects they illuminate reveal detail. One thing that is interesting to know is that LED lights come in many colors; all the way from infrared to ultra-violet.

For my part, I'm highly interested in what the CPF modification gurus offer to purchase. What they do can be tracked in the Homemade section here at CPF. Setting next to my mouse is a Mini-Mag modification that would amaze you.

I do not buy anything unless I thoroughly research it here using the search function. Before I buy, I post a question regarding the lights that are for contenders for a buy.

You have a special place here because as a "newbie" you will find that very knowlegdable people will help you rapidly.

You also have an extra special status with me because I have been predicting that this fairly new site will have 3000 members by 2003. Your member # is 2955 which actually makes the membership 2950.

There is a particular, tiny LED flashlight that you should have. Someone else will most certainly let you know about it.

Before you buy any more flashlights I would recommend that you use the search function, read allot then post a question about what you should buy.

There are basically five types of LEDs popular today:

These are usually mounted in small devices like cell phones as indicator lights to tell you the status of the operation

T1
Shape: Round
Size: 3mm
Current: < 20ma
Brightness: better

T1-3/4
Shape: Round
Size: 5mm
Current: < 20ma
Brightness: Some of the Nichia LEDs are 6-7cd

For all practical purposes, this is the most common case style in use today; you see them quite often in those little keychain lights and such

Spider
Shape: Square
Size: .3x.3 inches
Current: < 100ma
Brightness: Up to 4.3 Lumens

This one is finding a lot of use in some of the new luxory car tail lights

Luxeon
Shape: Round
Size: .3 Inch
Current: 350ma for 1w, 750ma for 5w
Brightness: Up to 25 Lumens

Since no electronic device be totally 100% eff, there is always going to be waste which is usually generated in the form of heat

The smaller SMD, T1, T1-3/4 Devices are limited in how bright they can get - simply for the lack of excess heat disspation, the small leads on them are simply not good enough to get rid of the excess heat during the light generation process

Sure, you can put more current to them, and they will get bright, but you are exceeding the package dissaption - and eventually something will "give"

The Spider has 4 leads which allows it to have approx 2x the metal conducting the heat from the die to the circuit board; this allows better heat transfer than the other 2 leaded devices

The die of the Luxeon is directly connected to the bottom of the case to a metal "slug" which allows greater heat transfer from the LED die to the heatsink

My friend Mark teaches a "Electronics 101 for Artists", a 10 week class here in Portland teaching basic electronics for artists doing "weird" projects

One night of the class - I give a 3hr presentation on LEDs; it has been ranked by the comment cards as the highlight of the class

He is now into production of high-end THEREMINS

I framed my reply without technical data and limited it to what is commonly found in LED flashlights. I left out the really exotic LEDs on purpose.
 
It's a good thing to be able to intelligently and knowledgeably dailog with others that understand the technolgies being discussed.

I believe that it took some very special skills to synthesize the salient points about LEDs into a few words, easily understandable by someone that just walked in the door.

That was a most excellent introduction to our fascination with LED science. Good job!
 
I just had a chance to look at Mike's project. That's something else. Public art on a huge scale. I think the other members would find it just as interesting as I did. Have you considered putting it in it's own thread? I mean, if that's not LED related I'm not sure I know what would be. This is the first I've heard of it.
