Fenix E01 on 10440

Anybody try this yet? Will it blow immediately or handle it? Haven't seen any posts by people who've tried it or could deduce whether it would work.

I never use my E01 and if I can use it with a 10440, even if it shortens the life of the LED (to something reasonable, not <1 ms) then I'll make that sacrifice for more output.

If you want more output, the E01 isn't for you. Get an L0D or LD01.

p.s: I imagine it'll blow the circuit, but if the circuit can take it you'll be very lucky to get an hour out of the LED.

If its a buck circuit theres the direct drive mode when the input voltage is higher than the driver's overhead
If its a boost circuit direct drive mode comes after the voltage input meets and drops below the converter limit. so an input voltage higher than the overhead limit of the step IC may fry the IC before it can do anything about it

Mine runs fine on a Li-ion, but it's not appreciably brighter than with NiMH. I just run it on 10440s for commonality with my other 10440 lights.

All right well I tried it and it didn't fry it.

Measured with the lux measurement on the CHDK hack on my Canon camera, averaged a few times with 2 diff types of alkys, 2 diff types of NiMHs, and 2 different types of 10440s.

The alkys and the nimhs had the same lux reading on the camera. The 10440s put out about 50% more light at around 3.9v.

I won't give the lux measurements because they have no bearing on anything other than comparing them to each other. ie., they're not absolutely accurate, but I didn't move the camera and placed the light in the exact same position and averaged it over several battery swaps and it was always within about 0.5 lux for the different non-lith AAAs and for the 2 diff. LiOns. So I'm pretty confident in the measurements vis-a-vis their relationship to each other.

Unfortunately the output is so low anyway that a 50% increase in almost nothin' still ain't much.

Not sure it's worth using LiOns, especially since they're unprotected.
 
Heh, good to know it can take ~4Volts.. I was pretty sure it would go :poof: :grin2:
 
My own experience with overdriving 5mm LED's (in DD cheap chinese lights) is that they will hold for 60-90 minutes max. and then :poof:.

So, if the EO1 goes into DD, I would expect the same. Just warning :naughty:

I changed my post because for the next hour or so after posting I wasn't able to find concrete evidence to support it through google search.

I have plenty of E01s here but My 10440s are either dead [2V OCV] or missing:thinking:
 
Like many lights made for AA or AAA Alkalines and NiMH you may get away with it for a while but it's sort of like taking a car with a tachometer and running it over 'Red line' all the time. It probably won't blow up right away but you'll drastically shorten it's useful life. It's not a light made for brightness and for around $8 you can get a AAA based light with a SSC P4 that puts out way more Lumens than the E01. Look on DX for an Akoray and they even have a tail switch.
 
If there's a direct drive option I'm sure the GS will hold out for awhile and eventually cook itself. If not with 4.2V through the pea sized inductor the fat little dwarf sitting in the driver's control room will see surges through the reference voltage bias and might go haywire

That's at a stretch. Not enough heat dissipation.

So, you may get away with more, using short bursts.

But, what's the point in turning a perfectly reliable light into a liability?

For more light, there are plenty alternatives, with better efficienty and tint.

I agree.. I'm just kinda bored with the light and wanted to try something new. It doesn't fit into my lifestyle all that much. Too big for me to keychain carry (I carry fauxtons) and too dim for me to bother pocket carrying. Just sits there.
 
Yah, I know how you feel. I keep looking at the E01 and thinking, it looks nice and it's a Fenix (!) and it's so affordable. But then I remind myself of the tint and the low output... m u s t r e s i s t . . . . .

Because I know I would be like you, it would just sit someplace unused.
 
I thought of sticking it in the car and forgetting about it, but I want something in the car with a strobe for emergency purposes.

I thought of using it for a nightstand light, but I want something that's bright and has a forward clicky just in case I need to pull out the Smith and Wesson on an intruder one night.

I thought it could be a "backup nightstand" light but it's so tiny I fumble around in the dark trying to find it.

I thought of giving it away but the first day I had it I dropped it and took a nick out of the black paint :(

If I need a low-power light to make sure I'm not stepping on gum in a darkened movie theater or whatever, I have a ramping AAA that does the job.

Just can't think of anything to do with it that I can't do better with another light..........

The only thing I can come up with is if you have a computer or TV or something that you're always plugging stuff into the back of, and it's dark back there, it might be worthwhile to simply leave the light behind the computer or TV so you don't have to look for a light each time.

???

(but then you could buy a dozen fauxtons for a few bucks and leave em behind all your electronic devices)

guess the E01 plusses are, it's small and it has a very long runtime. When would one need a tiny light with low power and extended runtime?

Hey hey keep that E01 stock. You'll regret killing it!

My E01 lives on my keyring so it gets pretty worn and has a nice look. It doesn't get used often but when it does get used I *know* it will fire up every time.

It fits into a special class of lights - small, reliable, long running time lights suitable for an emergency situation. One you can forget about until necessary. Use it accepting this, and you'll learn to love it :)
