I am looking to build or buy some fireflys that would be visible to night vision or IR only. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will be using them for mostly wilderness or remote area searches and they will be attached to the law enforcement officers conducting the searches.

Thanks,
Pyro

I have a military Firefly. It is a unit about 3/8 X 1" that snaps on a 9v battery. It is in OD Green and has two IR LED's on the top of the unit.
Does that sound like what you are looking for? If it is, I can give you the Mil-spec number and post a picture after I get home from vacation next week.

Dana,
That is exactly what I am looking for. If you have a source for them please let me know also.

Thanks,
pyro

I received mine from my son. When he ended his stint in The USMC, he gave me most of his gear that was his to take.
When I get you the Mil-spec number, there are a few suppliers that can order most anything for you.

I found the firefly. Here is the information on the case.

LIGHT, IR TRANSMITTER

See if [email protected] or the fellow that runs lightfighter.com can help you obtain the unit.

We used to use the fireflies for the AC-130 gunships or attack helicopters. They are very effective at being noticed from above.

You can also get your officers to wear a 1" X 1" glint squares. It is better to sew these into velcro with a velcro patch on the piece of uniform facing the sky (hat, shoulder, top of ruck). The glint tape is only good if your AC has an IR source of it's own. Any bigger than 1" you will make it difficult for the flight crew to see, it is that blinding.

Thanks Guys. I have checked out all the equipment you have mentioned. I am going to see if we can pick some up from the local military equipment disposal program.
