i have thought about picking up a FF before, when I have seen them for sale.
I might have to jump on this one.
Blue HA huh? niiiice, finally, something different.

I bought both, but I didn't remember what I paid for them. So I just looked at the Firefly thread for the price.

its probably too late to consider a change in the the body, but in future runs, maybe you would consider making a flat tail so the firefly can be placed pointing up.

I don't want to say too much before settling details, but I am working on a flat-tail version of the Firefly... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif And BTW, for those keeping track, it looks like the module will be the BB650 with 3W Luxeon - we've got that pretty much nailed down.

utomatoe - the Firefly is designed to be thr most compact light you can get for the battery/Luxeon/optic setup. A Kroll would add 1/3 again the length - not going to be done for the stock 123 body. I am working on a 2AA body, which will have a Kroll. It will be offered a little later on as an option. The CR2 body may creep in too... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is all sweet news. Do you know what bins for Lux IIIs you will be able to get?

A flat butt would be nice, so is a lanyard hole (please no jokes about lanyard B holes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). A 2AA option sounds quite nice. I am assuming that NiMH will be supported (and perhaps required for current load)?

If it has a lanyard hole and is available with NX05, this one will be hard to resist /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If I understood correct the light will be made of copper.
Can copper also be hard anodized ?

The exterior surface of the light is almost entirely HA aluminum, with only a copper band showing between the head and tail sections, where they screw together. This is because the copper section which surrounds the MM or BB sandwich module, is in its turn covered over by a HA aluminum bezel, which squeezes the lens o-ring, lens, and optic, down against the Telurium free machining copper head. The copper provides superior heat disipation for the LED and electronics, and also has a more mass to resist changes in temperature. The Firefly is flat-out one of the most beautiful lights ever made. Period.

Also, from what I understand so far, the flat-tail Firefly will be an option that you can choose, lanyard hole tail section being standard.

Jim, you have it down very well. One minor correction is that the flat-tail (not actually flat, but will stand on its end the same way) will be the body I go with, if I can get the machining done for a reasonable price. I will post a picture of a prototype once things get settled for certain (going to be talking with a new machinist Tuesday).

Erik, AFAIK, the word on the Lux IIIs is that there are no bad bins. Obviously there must be some variation, but the quality control should be much tighter than some of the LDs in the first Fireflies.

There may be no bad bins with regards to the tint of the LuxIII's but the brightness and Vf specs will have an effect on the runtime and overall light output of the light. This may be what the others as well as I am curious about.

A two stage switch in tail of firefly would increase usibility greatly. Currently there is just not enough room for a 1/8 watt resister in the base. If you rigg something up to contact the base/resister. the two stage light works great. But then firefly's body will not seat all the way up against copper basket.

Currently the neg batt post is aprox. .075, 1/8 watt resister is .080. There is not enough extra metal in base to mill a slot for resister.

If you go with the Arc first run twisty base design (longbow too) VS new Arc AA base design, there would be plenty of metal to mill a slot to hold a resister or simply make the batt contact slightly larger diameter and taller, to allow room for a resister.

Two brightness levels would definitely add to the value of this light !

I just recently added the fine high/low kroll switch mod made by gadget_lover to my ARC LS - great !

The question is how the BB650 of the FF handles the lower voltage when a resistor is added - does it
lower the brightness or does it try to hold high level /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

The wonders of Larry has created a two stage board that you can retrofit in the existing FF's or can be incorporated in the next run of FFs. It's undergoing testing at the moment, and they should be available on the shoppe shortly.

The resistor behaves the same for all BB's. Since it drops it out of regulation, it doesn't matter if it is a BB400 or BB600. The brightness is determined more or less by the battery voltage and the value of the resistor.

You're going to do a stand-up end with a lanyard hole along the lines of some of tvodrd's lights, or the Arc AA?

Any chance the tail section would fit the first-run Firefly? Could you make some extra tail sections in that case, in black HA to match the first run heads?
