today i dropped my arc lsh-p for the first time, and now its got a small dent on the bezel. i'm now pretty upset cos i was intending to keep the light in as good a condition as possible /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

how do you guys deal with the first dent or major scratch to your precious lights and how did you first drop/scratch it? i was fumbling my way through my dark house after i just got back and after i just clicked on the light i dropped it as i was flipping it around in my palm to a different position. i think i would have been ok if it was the tsp that got dented, but since the head is the most permanent part of the light its something i won't be able to rectify /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif

First dent? So you actually expect more in the future? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Definitely sorry to hear that. I guess that's why some guys got 2 of them, one for collction and the other for EDC. I dropped mine twice on the wooden floor so no dent yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Think I'll be more careful. Maybe you'd attache a lanyard to yours.

getting more dings and dents is unavoidable, but painful nonetheless especially for the first one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif do you have any good recommendations for a lanyard? i'd like one without any metal parts whatsoever, and it should be able to strap around your wrist or palm to secure the light /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

it still hurts to look at the dent /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Here's a suggestion.

This is what I did. Unfortunately it took a small dent on the bezel from a drop to cement to make me protect it better.

I shrink-tubed it and put a finger-lanyard on it. It's just a piece of fabric braided elastic like you find in the waist part of some raincoats and light jackets. It can be bought at Walmart or fabric stores. Just a few stitches to secure the ends together after pulling it through the lanyard hole, and leaving a loop just smaller than a finger so it's snug. I then shrink tubed the joint. It works very well. I just slip a finger through and I don't have to worry at all about dropping the light even if I release my grasp, accidentally or on purpose to free up my fingers temporarily for a task. And since the lanyard is so short I can regain my grasp on it one handed. It's also easy to turn on one-handed, and without fear of fumbling it in the process.

I made the holster out of cordura with lexan inserts to keep its shape and a "safety" lever to keep the LS from being removed accidentally. It's a quick draw holster.

If you use the clicky switch, you may have to modify the length of the lanyard since the switch protrudes.

Nothing but the best for my LS. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

thanks a lot gyverpete!! i was looking for something like that all the while /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif i removed the split ring on the tsp because i didn't want the sharp ends to slowly gouge the lanyard attachment point..i see you've done the same /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif i'll probably substitute the braided elastic for some nylon twine or something.

thanks again for your help! i've sorta gotten over it now, though i wish i wasn't so clumsy with it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif i'm actually pretty ok with scratches (and the HA takes care of that pretty well), but dents drive me nuts to no end!

As one who would *never* buy a $160 flashlight: Buy $60 seconds and enjoy without fear. I like to look
at the flashlight and not at something that looks like it belongs in a nightstand next to the astroglide.

I recommend you drop the light as soon as you get it and get the first dent out of the way. It is a tool and you shouldn't have to baby it.

Peter

Maybe there should be special units made that have been "pre-dropped" as to get the first dent out of the way?

Ah heck, for any CPF member I'll do it for free! I'll even provide a video clip of me throwing it!

peter, i understand...in fact i prefer my lights to look used and a little banged up, but the first dent always hurts the most. this is compounded by the excellent craftsmanship and flawlessness of your lights. the dent in the bezel is tantamount to a large hairy mole on a supermodel's face /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

as an aside, i used to wash the entire head of my arc AAA in water because i knew the head was potted. would i be able to do the same with my lsh-p? i recall reading that the newer arc LS's are no longer potted but i can't be sure.

just a suggestion but maybe a simple lanyard of some sort should be included with the arc LS instead of, or in addition to the split ring? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i would recommend you be careful with the shrink wrap. it will act as an insulator, and keep the heat inside.
i believe the arc ls has a thermal protection curcuit though, so as long as you don't plan on using it for long... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The newer LS are not potted and you shouldn't immerse the head without the battery pack installed. I already have an inquiry out for lanyards.

Peter

peter: that's good to hear! i'll definitely get one once they're available. in the meantime i'll try to jerry-rig one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

btw does anyone have any arc LS abuse stories? its pretty much been established that the arc AAA is near indestructible but i don't hear much about the LS in that aspect /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nice touch, Yclo...

Nice touch.

cham, i don't think many people try to abuse their ls as much as their aaa /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

but i think the lack of stories is a good sign /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

it would also appear that they survive dings quite well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

apparently that's the case /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif it'll be nice if the LS could in fact survive the same abuse that an arc AAA could though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm with peter - though a bit pricy, the LS is a tool - I'll start to get worried when it's worn through enough that I can start to see battery...

Would you like me to give your LS's a work over? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

deanster: i now agree...i've gotten over that dent and now i really use my arc. was helping a friend install a graphics card in his computer and in between using the LS to illuminate the innards of the computer i just let the light clatter to the floor. when in my pocket, i throw coins and keys in the same pocket without a second thought /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

would still like to hear some LS torture stories though...or perhaps some pictures of well-used arc LS's? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
