Sotto: Thank you for the humor. This sounds like a very potent weapon,,,,,,,,200 years ago. I'm sure it could indeed kill a bear or cougar but not many of us would have the required skill for a single attempt spearing. After one attempt, if the animal is not dead, you are sure to be.
Nikola Tesla: I like your idea, but I'm afraid one would have to be too precise in a situation that more than likely would happen far to quickly to take accurate aim.
Cryptoguru: Not sure what a human who was stopped for a simple traffic violation has to do with a flesh-eating beast who has no concern of your life but rather wants to eat you. These wild animals have zero respect for man, in or out of uniform and make no distinction about those they choose to attack. Contrarily, that man's face that you shined your light at had to respect the fact that you are an officer. If you were off duty, and simply shined that same light in that same guys face, he would probably retaliate. Fortunately for you, he showed respect.

Where do you get a 120MW or 80Mw Green Laser for that matter? I seen 1 site with a 95MW but I am skeptical about its credibility.

I wouldn't even bother with the 9mm. Even out of a ~16in barrel, you're still only talking maybe 400 fpe at the muzzle with a lightly constructed bullet. Heck, even the 9mm WinMag is only 556 fpe (115 gr 1475 fps factory load) at the muzzle.
Bears are big and pretty well constructed critters. The 9mm should be good on mountain lions though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Could it kill a bear? Sure. Could it STOP a bear? Nope, not reliably.
Shot placement is first, then the proper bullet for the task, and then enough power to get the job done. A 9mm pistol round fails on the last two criteria IMHO.
The 12 ga with good slugs would be a decent bear stopper at close range. Has anybody used OC spray on a bear???? IMO (without testing it myself...) I think it would just **** the bear off! Not that a flashlight would be any better... I have tried shining my 120 lumens at wild boars, cats, dogs, and even birds but all seem nonchalent. They only stood there but did not seem to run or even hide, and in most circumstances even stared at my flashlight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Using a flashlight for defense against animals may not work as we'd like.
You can blind a human and, given a 10 second head start, probabaly out-run him or her. Given a 10 second head start, a doberman would probably catch me long before he gets tired. Bears are VERY fast. You won't be outrunning them, especially on trails.
The best defense against bears is the buddy system. Just make sure you have a slow buddy.

I have successfully used pepper spray ("Repel", one of the first commercially available OC products) on a large attacking dog.

Pepper spray will even stop a grizzly bear! Canadian park rangers use it. It's very effective stuff. It doesn't work because it hurts. It works because it closes the mucous membranes, and makes it nearly impossible to breath. Of course, it also closes the eyes.
