Flashlight for longguns

Hey There,

New poster, long time lurker. Need some advice from the collective wisdom. I'm a little tired of paying surefire prices, and I need two to buy two flashlights in the next couple of weeks. I've had fenix lights (one broke under recoil), so I'm a little leery of those.

Here is what I am looking for:
1) 1 compact light to be mounted on a Steyr Aug. I'd like it to be compact, CR123, and be at least 200 lumens. More would be better, strobe would be ideal. Steyrs are not hard kicking, but it needs to stand up to that recoil. Need to be able to light up 70 to 100 yards. I'd like it to be able to take a leash/pressure pad, but its not absolutely vital. IS the Olight M20 a good choice?

2) Medium size light for a FNFAL. 500 lumens at least. strobe would be nice to have. A leash/pressure pad is essential because of the forend on the FAL. Thinking 3 CR123s but I'm open. 200 yards would be great, more would be fine too. Again, it has to stand up to 308 recoil. M30?

I could spend 150 bucks a light. I want them to be reliable and bright. Runtime less critical, as they are going to be mounted and used for defensive/offensive use. I can change batteries every day if needed. I need them in hand by April 10, so ship time is also important.

It seems like whenever there is a question about weapon mounted lights or lights for use in life or death situations, Gene Malkoff's stuff is usually at the top of the list. I don't own a Malkoff myself, but I would love to.

You could pick up an MD2 for your small light. 2xCR123 and it's 260 lumens for 2 hours.

For your bigger light, you could go with the Hound Dog head and an MD3 body. 320 lumens but with that big reflector Gene says is will throw 1,000 feet and I believe him.

You can get a whole MD2 (Light + M61 drop in) for just over $100 and the Hound dog head ($150) + the MD3 Body (~50) for a total of right around $300. If you wanted to spring for the new Hound Dog XML (750 lumens) it would cost a bit more.

No Problem. I really wish we could get some more comments in this thread. I don't have a single weapon mounted light and here I am making recommendations based only on what I've read. Maybe some gun toting CPFers would care to comment?

I'm thinking the 4sevens Maelstrom G5 would be suitable for the FAL. It has an optional tape switch and also has strobe.

I do like Malkoff's stuff-- check out Elzetta as they use his light engines in their lights, which are explicitly designed for use on guns. An MD2 with M61 will be lighter weight and may still be very tough, so it comes down to small differences and preferences.

I have a light mounted to my coyote rifle, but it is probably a little bigger than what your looking for. I use a Ultrafire from Brinyte available here http://www.aliexpress.com/product-g...Latarka-Wholesale-And-Retail-wholesalers.html It takes a 18650 battery and the battery lasts about 2 hours. With the white Q5 LED it'll throw to 200 yards easy and is super bright. I have two with green LEDs. The price makes it an attractive option too.

On the subject of Malkoff lights, I'm told that they'll operate with a Mini-Mag compatible tape switch, like the TacStar I have. (At least, I think it's TacStar)

I don't know if that's a priority for you, but it is an option thanks to Malkoff's use of the new high(er)-current Judco clicky that started life as the Kroll switch for mini-mags a revision or more ago.

Not to mention that Malkoff's redesign of the Judco clicky results in higher reliability than the older, much maligned Krolls.

4 Sevens G5 works very well on this Beretta CX4 (No. That is not the normal optic I keep on this weapon. I have a short 3x-9x). The price is good, it will strobe if you want, and has a narrow beam. Handle the recoil fine on this weapon so I don't see why it would not on your Steyr Aug.
