Trying to find a light for my wife who trail runs at night. She'll only let me spend $25. :thumbsdow I did a search but couldn't get any hits (I may have done something wrong). . .

Ok, here are the answers.

Those are pretty tough requirements given the price range. :thinking: I could poke around a bit more when I have the time, but the only flashlights that spring to mind are the iTP A4 EOS and the Romisen RC-N3. I'm not sure whether they fully meet your requirements, but they seem to come the closest in your price range.
 
I think you'll have a hard time finding what you want, unless you go to somewhere like DX and roll the dice on durability/battery safety.

As a night-time trail runner, though, I'm curious: why is a headlamp off the list? (And for what it's worth, $25 is unlikely to get you a headlamp that fits your specs, either.)

I managed to do some additional research, but thus far haven't been able to find a better match than the Romisen RC-N3. The restrictions I've imposed on the flashlights I've looked at are: that they must be of known decent quality, that they must have been independently tested for output and runtime performance, and that they have a meaningful amount of user feedback.

I estimate based on independent testing and some extrapolation according to LED flux bin data that the latest R5 version of the RC-N3 will give you approximately 120 OTF lumens on High for nearly its entire runtime (a bit higher initially and just slightly lower near the end). I think the manufacturer claims anywhere from 180 to 240 lumens, but unless they've changed the driver significantly, that's an exaggeration; other budget flashlight manufacturers probably exaggerate just as much or even more. :tsk:

120 verified (as well as I could--unfortunately I had to make some assumptions, but I suppose that's better than nothing) OTF lumens is probably close enough to what you want, and it helps in terms of runtime.

While I'd personally prefer a wider flood for running, relatively speaking the RC-N3 is a bit more of a thrower than many popular general-purpose/EDC-type flashlights, so it should meet your requirement, I think.

Is 2 hours & 50 minutes to 50% on two reduced-capacity rechargeable AA batteries good enough? (it works pretty well on alkalines, too, running 2 hours with somewhat reduced output) In addition, all but the last 10 minutes or so are near the 120 lumen level (R5 version), which is pretty good, actually, budget light or not. Here is the test data:

So far so good, but unfortunately there are some cons to the RC-N3, as well:

1) Its somewhat narrow flood is not the most ideal for running, but it matches your throw requirement above and should suffice.

2) Its finish is said to be relatively soft and easy to wear away.

3) Because it can take both 2xAA and 1xCR123A, the front battery rattles when using 2xAA (which you'll need to do for maximum runtime). This can't be good for running. :ohgeez: There are workarounds, of course, which involve putting o-rings or paper or tape around the battery, as you might expect.
 
i'd look at the Olight i2. $25 on the nose. probably the best you can do for a semi quality/ reliable light on your budget.

or if you're feeling more adventurous, a Solarforce L2r w/ XPG dropin for $24. this ships direct from Hong Kong, so if you don't like it, good luck returning it.

you can get much brighter lights for less, but that would involve doing a lot of reading and learning about iffy budget P60 hosts and xm-l drop-ins and just as iffy 18650 batteries and chargers. if you're up for it, the info is available in the budget lights sub-forum.

The only lights that I can think of are those city cat AA flashlights or a Xenoled EO3 flashlight. However I think the xenos are a bit above your budget but you might be able to find the City cats or Xenos at the CPF marketplace near your price range.

She has a headlamp but she also likes to carry a flashlight.

I'd be willing to go above $25, I just won't tell her what it cost. :naughty:
 
Thanks all. I will check out all the suggestions.

I think 3 hours runtime is probably enough. She goes on these 35-50 mile runs and I think she's only in the dark for an hour or so in the morning and a little in the evening if it's a real long run.
 
I just did a search for the RC-N3 at Shining Beam and got like 37 results! :huh:

hold up. the RV 235 NW is a single mode. runtime on a set of AA batteries might be less than 2 hours. unless you want to recharge your Eneloops after every run, you might be better served by something with a useful medium level.

The wife just told me she needs it to last 5 hours for a 60 mile run coming up. Which models should I look at for that? I'm willing to spend a little more (I won't tell her). :sssh:

PS - She has a 100 mile run coming up too and will need to go all night but I told to pack some batteries for that one. :)
 
you're going to need to spend more. maybe a lot more.

how many lumens does she need? and will it be for continuous or periodic use?

also, is she planning on using a headlamp at the same time, and if so, what's her headlamp?

also, what kind of terrain is she running on? streets or trails?
 
Not sure how many she needs (I'm new at this). Mostly she'll be running on a trail in the woods so I assume she should be able to see a little ways in front of her.

It would be continuous I think. Although she might divide the time between the morning dark and the evening dark.

Ok, the Romisen RV-235 NW looks good.

I think that's a good choice as long as they're still lying about the output like they did with the RC-N3. ;) I mean, if the RV-235 really did output 235 lumens (I doubt it), then the runtime would be half as long or less! :eek:

Any special AA batteries that are recommended?

Although it will cost you more money up-front, if the flashlight is going to be used regularly, as I gather it will be, then you should invest in NiMH rechargeables (if you haven't already). Sanyo Eneloop is probably the most trusted and one of the most-used brands, although from what I've read their budget chargers are pretty lame, taking forever to charge and only being able to charge in pairs (quite possibly overcharging some of the cells). In contrast, Sony's chargers (that they often bundle with their own brand of low self-discharge NiMH cells) are said to be much better, charging and monitoring each cell individually, as well as more quickly. Model BCG34HLD4KN is inexpensive and only has a single indicator light that tells you when all of the batteries have been fully charged (although each is charged separately), while Model BCG34HRE4KN costs more but has a separate indicator light for each battery, charges more rapidly (but not excessively so--about 2-4 hours), and has a "Refresh" function to try to rescue cells that have lost capacity for whatever reason (shouldn't happen in theory, but occasionally does in practice).
 
i would focus on the headlamp because running all night with one hand holding and aiming a flashlight is uncomfortable.

it might help to narrow things down if you could tell us what she uses now, and what she's comfortable with. if she has good eyes and if the trail isn't too bad, 40-50 lumens might be enough for her, but it's different for everybody.

The older version, the RC-N3, was tested by selfbuilt, and it pretty much lived up to its advertised 3 hour runtime, but at a much lower high mode than advertised. Whether the same is true of the RV 235's single mode is somewhat of a gamble, but it could be.
