Flashlight Wars, the Defcon Edition.....
I picked up a copy of the WWIII RTS game "Defcon", a game inspired by the movie "WarGames", in particular, the ending scene when the WOPR learns that *any* Nuclear exchange is ultimately futile....
"Strange game.....the only winning move is not to play"
I figured it'd be fun to set three computer opponents against each other to see what results....
the competitors were;
Incandescent (Russia)
HID (Europe)
LED (Asia)
those three areas were chosen for their physical proximity to each other, i played out three wars, same areas each time, and made notes of the results....
War 1;
Incan attacks LED in a conventional Naval battle, Incan wins
Incan initiated first strike against LED with SLBM's, decimating LED's coastline defenses
HID launches a retaliatory strike against Incan, Incan retaliates, LED launches against both, weighted more towards Incan
HID's retaliatory strike is massive, decimating Incan+LED
HID launces final SLBM strike against LED
Winner; HID
scores;
HID; 150
Incan; 45
LED; -45
War 2;
Another Incan Vs. LED naval battle, again Incan wins
Incan again launches first strike, SLBM against LED coastal defences
HID launches tactical bomber strike against LED
LED launches limited ICBM strike against Incan (LED has been badly hammered by the SLBM's), Incan responds with *MASSIVE* retaliation strike against HID
Winner; Incan
Scores;
Incan; 188
HID; 72
LED; -72
War 3;
Incan Vs LED naval battle, Incan wins
Incan SLBM first strike against LED coastal defences
HID launches *MASSIVE* retaliatory strike against Incan, Incan continues hammering LED coast w/ SLBM's
LED launches ICBM strike against Incan, is joined by HID
LED launches SLBM against HID, HID retaliates with ICBM launch against subs and into LED's main territory
Winner; HID
Scores;
HID; 109
LED; 28
Incan; 26
Overall winner, best 2 out of 3;
High Intensity Discharge!
overall notes;
Incan was the agressor in *every* war, launching SLBM's against LED's coast, Incan is best descrbed as highly agressive
LED was extremely passive in almost all wars, basically sitting there and getting pounded on, LED best described as pacifistic to the extreme
HID is best described as patient, in every war, HID would wait until HID and Incan were going at it hard and heavy and then drop in with a massive strike....
as far as territory goes, Incan and LED had the largest amount of space available, HID had the least, so logically, it would seem that Incan and LED would have the most advantages, able to spread their defenses out as widely as possible, to minimize collateral damage, wheras HID would be squeezed into a tiny area in Europe and easily wiped off the face of the earth by simple target saturation, this was clearly not the case, HID simply waited out the oter two, and while they were busy attacking each other, comes up behind them and flattens them both, winning by simply being patient.....
Awards;
Most Agressive; Incan
Most Peaceful; LED
Most Tactical; HID
Mac version of Defcon HERE
PC version HERE
both versions are fully playable demos, demo mode is limited to two players, but any number of spectators, demo version is unlockable by purchasing a licence code, which i highly reccomend, it's a great game, maybe we can get some CPF games going....
