Flashlights and Pizzas

I've never given it a lot of thought before, but pizza delivery people worry a lot when they work at night.

At http://www.pizzamarketplace.com/news_story.htm?i=16066 there's a long article discussing the issue and a number of guidelines to help drivers. One tidbit: '"In every driver’s tool kit ought to be a five- or six-cell MAGLITE," said Callahan, referring to the metal-encased flashlight known for its heft and durability. Other than using the tool to illuminate a path to a customer’s door, Callahan said it’s a handy theft deterrent. "When you’re swinging one of those, the collarbone’s very vulnerable. So are the jaw and the knee." Spoken like one who’s used it, Callahan added, "The four-cell, in my opinion, doesn’t have enough reach."'

At http://www.snitch.com/000292.html there's an article: "Dangers of Delivery" that discusses the problem too. “They are encouraged to carry cell phones and they are encouraged to carry flashlights,” Baugher said. “If they do not feel safe delivering somewhere, they come back to the restaurant,” he added. “I would rather not have the sales and have every driver safe.”

One disappointing comment: “We issue all of our new drivers a flashlight, one of those mini Maglites with a belt clip,” Hockert-Lotz said. “I think it costs us $8 per hire.”

Something tells me there might be a market for a flashlight designed specifically for delivery drivers.

My Daughter and her other-half, own a Domino's. I've supplied them with a Surge, 2 MiniMags with MadMax conversions, an ARC AAA Tq, and several Photon shaped UV lights (for checking for fake money). I don't know what their drivers use.

Last night, I put in 1 aaa in addition to 2 N cell's powering the brinkmann nexstar bulb!

Talk about a mini-Stinger!!! white, white, white(almost blue looking) won't last long though

If you know what you a doing a 4 D cell, or 5 C cell is enough. True it doesn't have the reach of the 6 cell, but they are lighter, eaiser to recover for the next hit, are easier to recover from if you miss, the first swing will be quicker, and aren't as likely to cause crippling damage. A 4 D cell mag will hit harder than any baton. Joints, or hte collarbone should be secondary targets, if strikes to primary targets fail. The upper outside thigh, just al ittle towards the back has a large cluster of nerves, making it a very effective target, the top of the calf as well. For bony targets, the only ones that should be attempted first, are the shin, and forearms. This assumes that the attacker is not armed. If he is armed, then go for hte knees, collar bones, elbows, wrist and hands. A larger mag will crush bone with relative ease.
The AA mini can be used to reinforce the fist, either for nomral punches, or a hammer blow with the end sticking out from the base of your hand. Ribs, forarms, inner upper thigh, biceps, are all good targets. It can also be used as a Kubaton, but those are generally pain compliance holds, and not too usefull unless you want to hold the person for the police.
The Tigerlight might be the best choice, if the drivers are allowed to carry OC. Blind 'em with light, spray 'em with OC, and if that still doesn't work, smack 'em around 'til they give up. It's also light enough that it won't be as damaging, while still getting the job done.

I think a 4C is a good option. About the same length as a 3D, but lighter and smaller diameter. Allows me to get a better grip and whip the barrel around more quickly. For me, it's a better fighting flashlight. If I were really worried, I'd carry a small OC on my hip. The US with a WA01111 would be pretty intense as well.

Again you need to know how to use the light as a weapon for it to be effective. Mindset and situational awareness are very important. It doesn't matter if you have an M16, a 12guage, and three 45's, if you don't notice the dude sneaking up behind you, and let him surprise you.

Unfortunately that's true. If you deliver a crippling blow, you are almost at the point of lethal force. You pretty much have to prove that level of force was justified. Either because lower levels of force that failed, or that it was the only way to stop him. For court purposes, you's probably be better off if he had a gun in one hand, and a machete in the other so you could just shoot him.
