I second gyverpete'e advice. I've flown on about 25 flights to different locations in the US in the last 2 months with a z3-kl3 in my computer bag and a m6 in the carry-on without issues. I put all my metal items in the computer bag and let it run through x-ray.

Regarding the mailbox thing: some of the gift shops will sell you a bubble pack and postage and mail it out for you. Just in case you forget to put that Emerson CQC7 away.

I've often flown post 9/11 with many lights, carry-on only and never with checked luggage without serious hassles. On a trip to Canada I had the following lights:

On person:

ARC SLS 2AA (belt holster)
E2E/MN03 (Right rear pocket)
ARC AAA Le & Photon II (Keyring - right front pocket)
2 SF 123's in cellphone holster under cellphone

In jacket pocket: 2L

In carry-on (no checked luggage):D3 with SRTH, Surge, Reactor, MagAA Inretech, ASP Taclite, 12 SF 123's in Saran Wrap, 4 Energier AA Lithiums in Saran Wrap, Eternalite (original) in ziplock bag with pill bottles, toothpaste, etc.

Before I go through the metal screener I deposit EVERYTHING metallic into a tray, put it on the conveyer belt and walk thtrough the screener. It never beeps.

Once, when returning from Canada I had to demonstrate several lights and empty them out, but I'm glad to do it in the interest of security, though I'm certain that plenty of illicit items slip through the net.

Just as an aside about the screening, I used to travel every week through Boston's airport, and then of course at the other end wherever that was. At the security gates there were often 2 guards, one at the other side with a hand in his pocket. That darned metal detector has gone off when I had zero metal except the zipper of my pants. I'm convinced the 2nd guard can 'beep' the detector with a remote from his pocket if he wants to. Take a look the next time you go through.

Really, the guards can and will stop you from boarding with anything they think might be dangerous. I went through a detector with a small camcorder and tripod a few months ago. The tripod was one of those flimsy ones, about 16" long when folded and weighed about 1 pound. The guy wouldn't let me board with it because he said it could be used as a bludgeon. So I'm sure he'd have never let me take a 3D Maglight on board. (I did have a UKE 2L which he didn't bother me about, though he made me turn it on). It's all sort of random.

Sure, if you pull out enough rulebooks you might eventually convince a supervisor that your item is permissible and they should let you on with it, but by the time you finish that, you'll probably have missed your flight. I think the safest approach is to check anything that they might bother you about.

I am still amazed they list umbrellas and walking canes as acceptable items for carry-on, but yet you can't have a golf club...... Isn't this a little weird???? I mean, my golf swing is dangerous, but I think I could do a little more damage with an umbrella or cane....????

Kogatana ("KT") advised me not to take a Tigerlight (even FBOP) on board unless it was in its original box. When that light is opened it could easily be mistaken for an explosive device. Also, it was (and perhaps still is) classified as a weapon, though I'm not sure if that applies to both versions.

(For Newbies, "Kogatana" or "KT" is a well respected CPF member who was/is involved with law enforcement probably on a fairly senior level.)

Wow, if the Tigerlight FBOP can give you problems, I'd hate to see what will happen if you had a SureFire M6 with you... I might be able to see the wiring of the battery pack for the TL as a problem, but I think if you demonstrate to the gatechecker that it's a flashlight, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've flown both domestic and international flights, post 9-11, with an E2 in my fanny pack and have never had a problem with airport security.

I did have a minor problem with security on a military base that handles nuclear weapons. Being on travel my rental car had a temporary base pass, and all vehicles with temporary passes were being stopped and searched at the gate. One day a guard wanted to look inside my fanny pack, which is no problem since I have to go through about 5 checkpoints to get to my work station anyways. I unzipped my fanny pack and pulled the flaps apart so he could look in. He saw the barrel of the E2 and commanded me to move my hands away from my fanny pack. He reached in, rummaged around, pulled out my E2, and then handed it back to me with an embarrassed look on his face. (Believe me, this is not anywhere as bad as having to kiss the pavement with a half dozen Marines pointing M-16s at you for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.)

regarding walking canes vs. golf clubs:

Back in Feb, I had to fly for the first time since I broke my back. Obviously, my cane went with me. In JAX, they took it from me, looked at it, handed it back, and I used it to walk through the screener. In DFW, they insisted on sending it through the xray, and had me hobble through the screener without assistance. (And got weirded out when I tried to touch the screener for support, since apparently that makes the screener do strange things.)

Regarding flashlights, in JAX they were interested in the Mini-LGI in my jacket pocket, and a stainless steel pill case on my keychain. DFW did not care about anything. (6P, 6Z, ARC AAA, AA Mini-Mag, Photon, a couple of laser-pointer/pen combos, plus the Mini-LGI.)

An update:

I flew with no problems at all!

I had an Arc AAA Turquoise in my left front pocket and an Arc LSH in the "pocket watch" pocket of my jeans.

My E2e and SureFire Turbo were in my checked luggage.

I also had no problems with security at the U.S. Capitol either.

Yesterday I flew from Orange County, CA to San Jose with an LE, E1e + KL1 and M2 along with an SC. No problems. We'll see what the return flight on Monday brings!
