Years ago I had a chance to inspect a Blackhawk Gladius and I was really impressed with the UI design that integrated a tailcap button to turn the light on/off and a rotating dial to select the mode (Momentary Switching, Constant ON, Strobe Mode, Dimming, and Lock-Out.)

Does anyone know of any newer LED flashlights that use a similar design? I don’t like having to memorize a complicated UI for each new flashlight I collect...so I like the idea of having a separate control for the mode and a separate on/off switch. Once the mode is set, it stays that way until I change it, and I don't have to remember how it's set!

Here’s the description of the Gladius UI from the Blackhawk website:

“The light features a patent pending multifunction tailcap that allows the operator to quickly select various modes including: Momentary Switching, Constant ON, Strobe Mode, Dimming, and Lock-Out all with intuitive, user friendly, one-finger operation. The switching is separated into two components. A familiar thumb activated push-button tailcap and our new proprietary patented rotary dial, also thumb activated.”

Peak Law Enforcement lights. Adjustable versions have rotating knob near base of head for dimming light level, and a forward clicky in the tail.

Surefire U2
EagleTac M2X series

Or do you mean a rotary switch in the tailcap??

I'm tired and confused

Yes, I meant to say a rotary switch in the tailcap. Nevertheless, I'm interested in hearing about any other innovative designs that allow a user to change the modes or power level without having to click a specific sequence on a single "on/off" switch.

I absolutely agree with you on that. The U2, Kroma, Vampire, etc... have excellent UI's that keep things simple, yet give the user a variety of lighting options. I don't have any lights with those options in the tailcap like the Gladius does, but I have used a Gladius and I do like that configuration as well.

My only point of contention is that the designs of some tailcap UI switches can be delicate, especially if they are made of plastic like the Gladius tailcap is. If you drop the Gladius onto its tailcap, it is possible to break the tailcap/selector mechanism. That could break the selector mechanism in the tailcap, not just the on/off switching. I had a tactical light some time ago that used a plastic tailcap similar in design to the Gladius. I was using it and accidently dropped it onto the tailcap. The tailcap shattered and the light never worked right again.

All that being said, I still like the design of these UI's very much.

I don't think that there are many lights with the rotary switch in the talicap. If you don't mind the rotary switch anywhere else, the above mentioned lights are all choices.
