Anyone ever have a folder open in your pocket? This was a first for me. It happened to me yesterday and left a rather nasty cut on my thumb it could have been much worse! At least it did not get my leg or more of my hand things would have been much worse.

I have no idea how or why it opened. All I had in the pocket was my BenchMade Mini-GRP (cliped on pocket), some quarters, and a pencil. I reached in for some quarters felt some grinding on my thumb and pulled out my had that now has a rather deep cut on my thumb.

The folder was open about 90 degrees. I cant think of anyway that my clothing, or anything in the pocket would have caused it to open. I suspect a week spring and gravity to be the cause.

I always carry a folder of some type (and yes i'm careful) and have never had a problem until now. This Benchmade is fairly new and just started carrying it everyday.

Is this common with the BenchMade Mini-GRP?

first thing i would check is, if its a true benchmade, lots of fakes going around and i doubt a BM would spontaneously open

I'm pretty sure that it is a real Benchmade. I have the original box, packaging, etc. It was a gift, but I do know that it was purchased at REI.

I'm going to contact benchmade to be sure.

Most likely scenario is the Axis lock was shifted when inserting or while in your pocket and this unlocked it. Probably a rare instance, that is why when carrying a knife, I keep it isolated so that it does not accidentally interact with keys, change....

Just talked to BenchMade they asked that I send it in to warranty and repair for a checkup. Off to the post office, or ups.

Yes, if something catches the axis and pushes it up far enough, it can/will fall right open even when clipped to your pocket. You might need the spring on the axis replaced if it is too easy to engage.

Coins might get caught in a knife (I've had it happen with others) or the thumb stud could have gotten hung up. I've had a few knives open part way but never anywhere near 90 degrees.

I'd double check the play in the pivot screw. Also, if there is much play in the knife (especially if you can detect it with the blade opened and locked) I would suspect the washers might be bad. If that's a likely suspect Benchmade should be able to set it right. Contact them and see what they say at any rate. Better safe than sorry a second time.

More and more I think that I like the idea of a horizontal sheath for a folder.

Good luck and heal up fast. Better yet get someone really attractive to kiss it and make it all better!

Were you carrying it "Tip up" or "Tip down"?

The way clip is designed forces a tip up when clipped to the pocket. So Tip up. Other knifes i have are tip up, some tip down I've never had a problem with them.

I always carry tip up and at the rear or back of my pocket, so that its harder to accidentally open since its pressed against the back seam of the pocket.

This thread needs pictures!

Wish I had taken a photo when it was gushing for some reason it did not cross my mind . Maybe I'll post a photo of the sidewalk where it happened.

I'll take the bandages off this eve and see if it is worth posting a photo. I think you would be disappointed. All that it would show is a bloody thumbnail and a super glue. Maybe you would be impressed with the one handed super glue job (combination of liquid bandage and super glue where the liquid bandage would not hold).

I'll give a quick description:
The cut starts the base of my thumbnail (alongside and under the nail) around the tip, and stops just past the tip of my thumb. It is about 3/8" deep for most of the cut, deeper as it wraps around the tip. When It was cut there was no pain all I felt was some grinding. Not sure if the grinding was from the knife scraping against the side of the nail as the it went under my nail, or, knife hitting bone.

Thats some sad new for me, I don't carry tip ups for this same reason...I will need to reconsider my Grip purchase now,:banghead:

If it makes you feel a little better a light flick will open my grip up and doubt that they designed it to open that easy.

I think that I just happened to get a bad egg. I will find out after warranty work.

But there is always the tip up issue...

I found the pic.... no need to bother.

Almost always I will carry my folders clipped with the spine of the blade against the seam of the pocket. Carried this way there is no chance of the blade accidentally opening and bloodying you up. Lockbacks are also excellent if you seem to have very bad luck as lockbacks have the most spring pressure against them accidentally opening.

Keep your pivots tight , and always carry tip down ( unless it's a slipjoint ) . Anything loose enuff to easily flip open , can also work it's way open . Jamming the knife against the pocket seam also helps .
