Forward facing LED lights

I know car lights aren't flashlights but I thought some people might be interested. I found what I think is the first example of all the forward facing lights on a car being LEDs. This includes turn lights, running lights, daylight running lights (I think), high- and low-beam lights. Each cluster comprises a total of 71 LEDs, so a grand total of 142 LEDs, though they won't all be on simultaneously.

This set-up is an option, as opposed to the standard set-up where the high- and low-beam would be Xenon or HIDs. I don't know what auxiliary light sources would be but most, if not all, would probably be incandescent.

I assume you are talking about the Audi A8 and R8? They both have optional LED headlights. Audi has really been a pioneer in the area of LED car lights. I am pretty sure they are also optional on the Lexus LS600H and Cadillac Escalade

I saw my first LED headlights in person for the first time yesterday. Stereotypical suburban chick/mom type, driving a cadi escalade with the LED headlight option. Looked same color as most HIDs, but main beam was coming out of a column of about 5 or 6 seperate projectors. As you lowered your elevation you see the lenses start lighting up. Very neat looking. Unfortunately, it was in the daytime, so not a clue what the output looks like.

At least one aftermarket manufacturer (Hella) produces an LED DRL that fires downwards into a reflector that's aimed towards oncoming drivers. Only the reflector is directly visible from the front.

I thought it was an interesting way to implement it. I'd love to see one in person.

"Towards oncoming drivers"? Don't think so. Forward, yes.

What happens when 1 or 2 LEDs burn out? Replace entire assembly?

Great when the warranty is in effect but lame when it expires and the owners needs to foot the bill.

A small nail in the coffin of the LED is the implementation.
