I think a lot of the problems I was having with my lathe were due to the cross slide nut being stripped. There is a backlash compensating nut that had been halfway rigged to act in its place, but it would move under stress.
Someone once had a web page extolling the virtues of junker lathes, and all the use I've gotten out of mine with a stripped cross slide nut really bear that out. It really was a nice lathe when it shipped, but it has been used hard.
