I have decided to keep both of these modded KL1's for the time being, however for those that are still interested in a HD equipped KL1 please read on.

After doing the two pictured above I have pretty much perfected the method of opening up and swapping out the LD for a HD, leaving the KL1 with no marks or scratches.

Therefore since there has been slight interest in those pictured above I figured why not just send me yours and I can mod them? Note that I am in Australia so turn around time will be ~4 weeks.

What will happen is you send me your KL1 and one of the below items..

(1) $42 USD (this covers the shipping, modding and the LS led, I have several Q ranked HD's at the moment)

(2) $27 USD + a HD that you want installed into the KL1

(3) Another KL1

Thanks.

For those that are wondering why, here is the difference in beam shape between a HD and LD.

yclo,

I am interested but I don't think it's the right forum to post the message?

That's a good point, but I thought about it and didn't know where to post it.

I am sort of "selling" a "non-light" item, i.e. my modding services?

Maybe someone else can post their thoughts on this?

Oh, email sent btw.

Yclo:

Are you just swapping LS's, or are you also offering to selectively change the output mA up to, say, 700 mA?

Erm, changing the output is a bit out of my abilities. I lack the SMD soldering equipment and experience.

So just swapping LS's.

I just got my L1 back from yclo and WOW!
Very, very satisifed!

He swapped out the stock low-dome LED for a high-dome (Q2J by the looks of it) and the difference is night and day.
This is what the L1 should have been from day one.
Low/High power operation is completely preserved and the low power mode is finally useful.
Low power used to be comparable to an Arc-AAA.
Now it's got a hotspot with throw.
High power is easily a match for my LSH-S.

And his work looks perfect.
Not a mark anywhere on the exterior or on the lens and the optic is the cleanest/clearest I have ever seen.

GJW,

I also found the YC-modified KL1 to be what all KL1s should have been. Now I'm thinking of have my L1 modified - if I can figure out which LED color I need.

I couldn't recommend it more.
The KL1 already has some high-dome competition with the LSH and the McLux but a high-dome L1 with its two brightness levels is a marvel that has to be experienced.

Arrrggghhh.... You people are killing me! I have a green L1, and I am getting this bad itch to buy another white L1 and send it away to YC. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif

You ain't kidding--I just got my L1 and I've been pleased with it, but after reading this I'm dying to send it in for a mod.

Thanks Greg & Alan for your kind comments! It was a pleasure!

Just for the record, the emitter used for GJW is a Q3J. And thanks to him sending me his L1, I now know how to do L1's too.

The Q2J KL1 is still here on the shelf gathering dust.

The Q2J just doesn't attract attention at all, therefore thanks to Cuong for some Q3J's I now have two KL1's with Q3J's looking for homes:

yclo,

Still at it, eh. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Chop,

Actually no I haven't been, exams coming up so have had to turn down all requests. Hope you can take care of them!

question for those of you who sent off your KL1 to be modded, what was the turnaround time?
