Hello guys, I have just washed for the second time my Arc AAA, one was by accident and the other was for the show of seeing it on while it was being washed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

I was wondering how much G-force it would take to damage a led, does anyone know?, the spin cycle on the washer seems to do nothing to the led and it goes really fast, BTW you really need to see it while turned on! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just make sure wife is not watching! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twak.gif

We just got a new front loading Whirlpool Duet washing machine and now due to your post I am thinking it would be really cool to see my ARC AAA blazing away in all of its glory in a high G spin!

Of course that HA knurling might do some damage to the interior of the washer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I suppose one could put some flexible tubing over the barrel to prevent damage to the washer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now I'm thinking that since I am going to succumb to this madness, I might as well toss in both of my ARC AAA's . I would hate for one to feel left out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

LOL!!! You guys are crazy. Luminocity, careful those Duets can really lay down the G-force law! The Whirlpool version spins at 1,100 rpm, and the Kenmore version (I have these) spins at 1,200 rpm! Assuming a radius of 1 foot on the inside of the barrel (pretty close), at 1,100 rpm this equates to about 115 feet per second. Also given the 1 foot radius, and since a=v^2/r, then you get 13269.1 ft/s^2 centripetal acceleration. Divide this by the acceleration of gravity, you get approximately 412 G's (490 G's in the Kenmore)!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Multiply that by the weight of the Arc AAA at .75 ounces, you get a weight of just over 19 pounds (23 lbs in the Kenmore)! Just FYI.
 
So its close to 500 G. How much G-force can a led stand? I am thinking in the thousand G range!/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif This led things sure are tough, I wonder if the batteries would leak their goo if over abused in G force environments, I´ll do some research on the net and see if I can get some info.

Or even worse is when you read posts during the day, ask the wife if she minds that I do the laundry tonight, toss in the CMG Ultra and take a picture of it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the led should be able to handle *extreme* cf...the failing point would be when the leads break between the board and the epoxy, that that would take *lots*
 
That pic is exactly what I saw with my Arc. cool isn`t it? but I didn`t dare to tell my wife(/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif). The agitation cycle is cool also I see flashes of light in one part then in another and so on, It would look cool in a tv comercial don´t you think?

The agitation cycle reminded me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, when the spacecrafts were lit up in the clouds. You would see faint light go to very bright, then it would dive down and disappear for a minute. Very cool to watch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

saunterer: this is very off-topic, but does your computer sometimes freeze up when you're playing games or doing something whereby your system's demand for power goes up?

from the picture you posted, it looks like you have the random-coloured-dots problem i used to have on my computer, which is a symptom of having a power supply unit that isn't able to supply enough power to satisfy your computer. the insufficient power supplied causes your computer to make errors when rendering graphics, and can also cause "illegal operations" in windows due to corrupted bits. this can be rectified by changing your p.s.u to a higher wattage model (preferably at least 300 or 350 watts).

anyway back on topic: i think any led should be able to stand up to any amount of G-forces so long as the structural intergrity of the resin encasing the led is sound.

Nope, the PC that I posted the picture with is rock solid. <knocking on wood> I've never had a lockup nor MS blue screen of death </knocking on wood>.

It's an 800 MHz with 1.5 Gig of RAM (3 x 512), and CPU is generally sleeping. Actually I never use that PC except for checking e-mail, and the general after-dinner CPF reading. (I know the RAM is overkill, but got it for free /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Funny, I've viewed that picture with my Unix work station, Windows Pocket PC, my other three PC's here in the lab and don't see any random-colored-dots that you are seeing.

Yep, my mistake. I do see them now after looking more closely. (You can tell I work for a phone company by quickly stating "no problem here").

Hmmm, I took 4 pictures of this may have to look at the others.

We've shot LED's upwards of 30,000g's with no ill effects. Of course you have to mount them so they don't tear off the board, but basically if you keep them in one place, there's nothing about them that fails that easily. We have small surface mount ones we've shot in penetration tests of concrete walls, and they've done okay. We've also done laser diodes in the 50,000g range, again, mounting is the key...

We routinely use them as light sources in centrifuges in the hundreds of g range, work good, last long.

Please explain in detail, sounds like something fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, Shoot in what? Where? what do use the leds for? pics? etc.

Sounds interesting, why not a new thread about it?
