g3 hotspot.

i just got new (old stock) incandecent sf g3 and its hotspot is oval, is it supposed to be like that or it is defective (in a way, still perfectly usable), module.
also it is 105lm, to my eye now it is not bright at all, i remember times when i was impessed with 60lm of surefie e2, damn i'm getting spoiled.
midway sells them for 29.99, i could not pass on that, a new suerfire for 30 bucks, even discontinued model, still can't go wrong.

My P90 in my SF G3 has an oval beam as well. Pop in 2X 17500's and it becomes a perfect work light.

My G3's P90 has an oval hotspot as well. All tightly focused incans will have an oval hotspot. If a bulb/reflector is designed to minimize the oval, a byproduct of the incan filament, it doesn't throw as efficiently. The MN03 in an E2e is an example of this. I also second the recommendation to use 17500s.

An oval hotspot is common on some Surefires. Some people like the oval shape. For example it could light up a person from head to toe at the right distance. I've found that 2 X 17500 batteries with a 7.4v Chinese dropin gives a good (not excellent) quality light that is round with some spill.

I find the oval hotspot very useable when lighting up my van at night in a parking lot or some such 'searching' activity.
