I think the reason that I have done well with the lights as gifts is I give lights that I think are what the person needs and not necessarily lights I would use myself. I am into mostly rechargeable lights with a few that run on 123 primaries while a number of lights I have given are lights that run on a single aa battery that I figure most people would have no problem keeping supplied.
The Fenix 1D has been very popular and well recieved as well as the single aa Eagle Tac.
The only rechargeable light set up I gave anybody was a Wolf Eyes to a brother LEO who loved it over his Streamlight Stinger as it was smaller and brighter and I also gave him Fenix 1D that was well recieved.
The wolf angel was also a good choice with its multi level and the ablity to run primaries or a rechargable battery that I gave to my machinist. So I think its in knowing the person that makes it work so well for me.

actually., my wife just stole my keychain Fenix P1D-CE, for her keys.
Normally she's a very prissy female (read- designer handbags, shoes, etc...)
so, no flashlight gift for her. I will have to find something to replace my keychain Fenix with. I have a Lumapower incendio, but it doesnt really clip onto the keychain. It comes in a holster which does, doesn't feel the same.
I did see a couple "bling" lights on Deal Extreme for $20 that were Fenix clones, seemingly well-rated. I liked the shiny stainless finish.
Either that, or I wait to get a Surefire Optimus as my keychain light..!
