Glimpse into Flashaholics
I recently got a glimpse of how a flashoholic may develop.
I currently own one Fenix TK10 and a AA Maglite. I recently purchased a FenixTK41 Cree XM-L(U2) as a gift for my father and a Fenix LD12 Cree XP-G2(R5) as a gift for a buddy of mine. I decided I wanted to buy a flashlight for myself.
I wanted a AA (x)4 flashlight I or my wife could use to see what the dogs are barking at outside and other general misc. use for around the house. Throw 200-300 meters, moonlight, low 5-10 lumen, 60 lumen, 200 lumen, then maybe 500 lumen with an easy user interface, and can tail-stand.
After days of looking at reviews and YouTube videos I am quite positively sure that the perfect light for me doesn’t exists. I can see why Flashaholics would buy a light for throw, another for perfect low and or moonlight, another for general purpose, another for the interface sequencing, another for the perfect amount of flood, another for battery types, maybe one for more of a tactical application and so forth and so forth…. It could go on forever it seems.
I narrowed my nominees to these three:
The Sunwayman D40A comes close with
Turbo: 980 lumens / .05h (too much for me and the neighborhood)
High: 550 lumens / 1.7h (I would prefer 2 hours)
Mid: 220 lumens / 4 hours
*Something here 60 to 100 lumens would be perfect*
Low: 30 lumens / 31 hours (a lower low 5-10 would be perfect)
Moonlight: yes
+for mode options
Nitecore- EA4 Pioneer comes close with
Turbo: 860 lumens / 1.75h (too much for me and the neighborhood)
High: 550 lumens / 2 hours
Mid: 300 lumens / 4.5 hours
Low: 135 lumens / 11 hours
Micro: 65 lumens / 22 hours
*Something here 5 to 10 lumens and a moonlight mode would be perfect*
+ for modes options and beacon light to help find it in the dark
Fenix LD41 comes close with
Turbo: 520 lumens / 2h10m
High: 190 lumens / 7.5 hours
Mid: 80 lumens / 20 hours
Low: 5 lumens / 160 hours
* moonlight mode and secure tail-standing would be perfect*
+ for longer run times and more familiar button interface
I am leaning towards the LD41 secondary to lower outputs with better run times would be more functional for me. I am more familiar with the Fenix brand. I still like the Nitecore and Sunwayman for the cool factor and multiple bells and whistles. I am trying to talk myself into the Fenix because it seems more functional, but... I may have more fun playing around with the Nitecore and Sunwayman :)
If I could I would buy all 3 lights.
