if anybody knows where i can get things gold plated that would be great. thanks

I work for an aerospace company in So Cal. I handle most of our out-sourcing for machining, heat treating and plating. I deal with several plating companies in California, but the only one I recall that does any gold plating is Metal Surfaces, Inc.

I'm not familiar with gold plating myself, so I don't know if the process they perform is one of an industrial type finish, as opposed to a dress type finish you're looking for. You'd need to contact them for details.

You may even want to contact a local jeweler. They may have sources for this in your area that are more oriented toward a dress type finish.

There are places that you can find on the internet. A lot of these will have some sort of minumum charge.

There's a process called brush plating where you just have a swab with gold plating chemical on it and apply it that way. Not a top grade technical job and a little vulnerable to corrosion but nice.

Copper and brass need a barrier layer of nickel over it because otherwise the gold diffuses into the substrate. It's also prone to pinholes creating corrosion.

Chromed stuff is easier you remove the chrome in one step and there's always a solid nickel layer underneath that was put there to support the chrome job.

Steel requires a nickel layer before the gold, but IIRC it needs to be especially thick because the steel's so prone to rusting.

Aluminum involves some exotic processes to plate.
