Good headlamp for camping and biking?

Hi all,

I originally posted this query in the "Recommend me a Light" subforum but one user suggest I repost the query in this subforum. Recommendations thus far have been Surefire Saint Minimus and Zebralight H51w. I'd be grateful for opinions on either of these headlamps, or suggestions of others!

***

I'm shopping around for my first headlamp. The intended uses are (1) for camping, so that I can do things hands-free, and (2) as a secondary light source for night-time road biking; when biking I have a Fenix LD20 strapped to my handlebars and shining ahead of me. I really like the Fenix LD20 and am game to pay more than low-end head-lamps cost to get something of similar quality. But I'm really open as to suggestions for brands and models for my first headlamp. Here are my parameters from the sticky questionnaire:

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! 🙂

Ideally, less than $100; but I’m flexible, so tell me what you gotJ.

3) Format:

I want a headlamp.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:

I want it light enough for it not to get uncomfortable with continuous use > 1 hour.

5) Emitter/Light source:

I'm flexible, but gravitate toward LED.

6) Manufacturer:

I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.

7) What battery type do you want to use?

I'm flexible, but would like to least having the option of using alkaline batteries.

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

I want to walk around an unlit rural area (50-150 lumens).

9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light? Select all that apply.

Any of the below would be attractive. Ideally, I'd also like the option to reduce the light intensity.

5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).

Ideally, at least:

90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase “you get what you pay for” is very accurate for flashlights.

Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).

12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply):

I don't care, or I don't know that I care..

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

Ideally I'd like at least 2 light levels -- a max level and a lower level that is sufficient for close-up work (e.g., cooking at a dark campsite) but uses less batter.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

I don’t care, so long as it's reasonably durable.

15) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any below.

None.

Thanks to all of you. I will repost in the headlamp subforum. Quick follow-up questions though: angelofwar, so you would recommend the Surefire Saint Minimus? I could bring myself to spend $135. Reppans: I took a look at the zebralight h51w online. Are there issues with its mount angle shifting while it's on the headband? It looks like it could conceivably be a problem given the mounting setup, but it's hard to tell.

Thanks again.

I don't think the light will rotate in it's mount, there's really no off-center weight in the light that would cause it rotate, except perhaps the clip... however, if you include the clip in the mount, it can either reside inside the mount to make even tighter, or be use outside the mount to lock it in place.

Bounce is different issue however, the band is not as robust as say a three-way band from Black Diamond, for example, although you can easily sew the extra band across the top of your head. Still with the batt and light in one location, you'll probably get some bouncing. IMHO, it will be unbearable if you run, somewhat noticeable if you hike, and be non-existent if you're just doing household chores around your campsite.

I took one of my spare brackets for my H51w and put it on my helmet under my visor with a velcro strip. I use it as an off-bike light when I need to see what's around me. It works excellently for that.

I also use it for camping, reading at night, etc. It's an excellent light. If you want a light that will work as a headlamp, and also be a great utility light that you can use as an EDC as well, it's hard to go wrong with a ZL headlamp.

If you're looking for a dedicated headlamp though you can also look at the new Spark lights. I also have an ST5-190nw and it's my favorite outdoors light. It has a center strap on the headband which gives me a bit more security, and also comes with an optional frosted lens that's easy to swap out with the clear lens. With the frosted lens it's very floody and gives a wider beam than my ZL. I also prefer it when I'm wearing a cap because it has a T body design with the emitter housing projecting forward which works better for me with a cap, or wearing the light under a hood.

Overall the ZL is more versatile though, and has a lower low than the Spark. I use both regularly depending on what I'm doing.

You mention biking, Will this be mountain bike, or road bike? what sort of terrain will you be riding..unlit trails, technical offroad, road biking at about 15 to 20 mph, or long distance riding events such as 200K and 300K brevets?

I'm an avid cyclist and ride at night, so once I know what you ride I can suggest more to you.

Edit..I just re-read your post and see you Road bike using a LD20. Funny thing is, I have done that too. My suggestion is you take a look at the Princeton-tec "EOS-Bike" I have been using one of these for years and it is hands down the best helmet mounted light I have found. Makes a good around camp light too.

Thanks to all of you! The Princeton-tec EOS Bike, Zebralight H51w, and Spark ST5 all look pretty good, honestly. Am I correct in understanding that the EOS is the heaviest of the three but the only one that can be directly mounted on a bike helmet, the Zebralight is the most versatile in terms of being able to be used as a regular flashlight, and the Spark is the only one that comes with a center strap on the headband?

I've never used a headlamp while biking before. How would you all compare the comfort and effectiveness of using a helmet-mounted light as opposed to using a headlamp on a headband for road biking?

If you're going to wear a helmet, you'll want it helmet mounted. I can't see many headband straps being compatible with a helmet. I like Bowzer's idea of using the spare ZL mount for that.... I could see it being a 2 min. job with a piece of velcro strap - I go above the visor threading through the helmet vents myself.

You can mount any headlamp to a helmet. Just remove the headband and slide some double-sided Velcro into the slots. Run the Velcro through the vents and you're set. Before I purchased the EOS I did this with several different headlamps. The "EOS-Bike" just makes switching easier. I cant speak to the weight except to say I've hardly noticed it up there.

I will say the EOS has been ultra reliable and I have ridden in some heavy rains with it.

For several seasons I camped using an Energizer e2 Lithium Ultimate headlamp. 3AAA, focusable(not really all that useful), and quick change battery packs(not sold seperately so pointless).

It worked great for the longest time, then it just went kaput. got another and still use it.

Now though, I bring a Spark ST6-500CW for camping and use with CR123A and now AW2900 18650s.
I recently got a Fenix HP11 so I'll be trying that out for camping this upcoming season and see how I like that. 4AAA and detachable diffuser works great!
