Good LED web site

I haven't seen this linked from the usual flashlight sites (Craig take note), so I thought I'd post it here. It links to a lot of LED info pages. It's quite a hardcore tech site, more aimed at electronics nerds than flashaholics, but could be of interest to LED buffs and modders here.

The first page linked has some good Luxeon output measurements, showing the red-orange Luxeon to be the most efficient so far...

I have Don's website linked to mine in no fewer than two places, probably more. But I don't think I have it "deep linked" so you'll end up at Don's front door rather than farther inside his website.

The second article ("High efficiency LEDs are generally only slightly more efficient than incandescent lamps") is one I have read at least five or more times and still have grave doubts about.

It may be good science and engineering, but I says it's just blasphemy....

Oh cool, thanks Craig. I remember Don's index page now, but his LED page is the one I bookmarked.

The LED efficiency page all seems correct to me. Incandescents have worse battery runtime because their color changes as the batteries run down. By the time the batteries are half discharged, the incandescent light is putting out mostly infrared, which does no good for illumination. Another way to look at it is incandescent efficiency (in terms of how much visible light you get) decreases when you run the lamp below the optimal voltage.

The problem I have with the efficiency comparison is he is using a 100 watt household bulb as his 'standard reference' for incandecent efficiency.

The difference in scale is enormous. What's the power consumption of 5mm nichia? (About 1/5 of a watt?)

A fairer comparison might be matching a 1W luxeon to a 1W halogen bulb. (Might be worse, it's late and I just don't know anymore....)
