Hi, my uncle wants myself and my brother to modify some headlamps to make them nice and bright for the fire department(just a small town one). could you give me advice on what headlamp to get and modify? He said he prefers 2AA but could go to 4AA. We want to get fairly cheap ones mostly throw but some flood would be good. Any help would be appreciated.

assuming these will be used for SAR and FD work, you'll probably want to throw in warm Q2's for cutting through smoke/smog and CRI... so;

hmmm... it's always hard to find headlamps that run on an even number of batts these days. Campmor always has the PT yukon on sale for around 35$.. it's a 4xaa, regulated, and has a 1w lux.. easy to swap out for an xr-e or p4. another good light to mod, but hard to find because of discontinue, is the BD zenix IQ ( from nextag search ). has a really good circuit and the lux star can swap for any standard 3w xr-e or p4.

For a little more mod, try the PT solo (~20$... toss in a chunk of AL, a driver board, and a 3w for a compact little thrower). also seem to remember seeing these for pretty cheap somewhere. Pelican makes pretty durable stuff.

campmore website, sierra trading post, and the cabelas bargain cave usually have pretty good specials on last years models...

Other than that, chech out the local wally world, lowes or home depot for ideas and possible digs.

GL and let us know what you decide on ;)
