Someone at work found an U.F. wf501 on the street, kinda beat up..and now someone else figures it'll be good for work..
They want me to pick him up one. I imagine these arent too poor a performer, but they claim 750 lumens for the "XML T6" models. The WHOLE packge (light,batts, charger)delivered is $39....
cant be too bad for the price....?
It'd be entirely for a maintenance mechanic's knock around light

That claim of 750 lumens is far from truth. Expect somewhere more along the lines from 350-ish lumens, at most.

Also, I wouldn't trust the included batteries and charger. Ultrafire rechargeables are underperformers, and their chargers don't charge batteries the way recommended by battery manufacturers.

If a mechanic is going to be using the light, consider giving him a small, floody headlamp, like Zebralight H31 (CR123A) or H51 (AA) series, so that both of his hands can be free.

I disagree. The 501B is a pretty well-proven budget-priced light. I have probably 6 or 8 of them and not a single one has let me down. And neither have my Trustfire rechargeable 18650's. They're right to spec on charge and discharge, and last forever.

I can't speak to the lumen output since I don't have measuring equipment, but a Cree T6 is going to put out some good light, even in a P6 host. I have a 501B with an XML drop-in and it's a powerhouse.

At first he scoffed at the shiningbeam and the price of some of these lights, but I think he's coming around

I just picked up a Ultrafire XML-T6. It's a 3AAA with zoom feature to tighten the beam. They claim 1600 lumes but it is comparable to lighs I have in the 250 to 300 lumes range. It came in at under $25 with free shipping so no biggie if it fails. It's the kind of lights you don't worry about beating it up, dropping it, or losing it.
