The last thing I need is some kid hacking into my lightbulb and turning my bedroom light on at 2AM!
 
I see a lot of new lightbulb jokes in our future. ;)

Why did the lightbulb turn off for an hour?
It was having a virus scan.

one to perform a throughput test on the new bulb.

Ok, after I was done laughing at the light bulb jokes, I went and read the article and noticed it mentioned Lighting Science Group and the bulb shown looked like the 60 watt equivalent EcoSmart A19 LED bulb I saw at Home Depot a few weeks ago. Looks like they just had to add some additional electronics into the base to allow wireless control and dimming.

Has anyone tried these Ecosmart bulbs? I looked at them at Home Depot and now I'm really wondering about the beam pattern. I can't tell if the lower half of the white globe is a reflector for the top half, or if both halves light up, or if it's some other pattern.
 
It does seem a little silly by itself, however in the context of a smart room that automatically turns on the lights when you enter, I can see their thinking. Having said that, I think the intelligence should go into the light switch, not the bulb, as it makes little sense in terms of "green" technology to throw out an electronics package when the bulb burns out. We do this now when CFL bulbs burn out; there needs to be a better way.

Ultimately a low voltage intelligent lighting system would be the way to go. Place all of the electronics and LED drivers in the fixed occupancy sensors, leaving the LED lamps themselves as just dumb emitters. This is better in terms of reducing landfill waste, reducing energy consumption (one step-down system instead of many) and even reducing the RFI generated by all of these systems.

It seems to be an immense conceptual leap for people to replace lighting fixtures in their residence - even the cheap builder-grade stuff with minimal aesthetic appeal or charm and no significant sunk cost. It seems that people will spend good money for nicer-looking fixtures (ie chandeliers), but buying for efficiency/cost-effectiveness only seems to work for linear florescent fixtures.
 
It isn't really that hard.

I was working on a project using a developer kit from Archer. Basically the whole chip can be powered by a grape- is wifi capable, and would add about 2$ at the most to the cost of manufacturing. With that, you could have 'dimmers' that basically send out a wireless signal to the registered lights and tell them what to do- no rewiring, no replacing the switch- no losses. The switch is nothing more than a power source which goes off and on, and the range is some signal that tells each bulb to go do something.

You could have had each bulb do something different- etc. Pretty fun.

The chip package I can find again- zigbee? I think was the name. Long while ago.
 
It's probably Zigbee or a close variant. Couldn't they have at least made the emitters separable from the base units, the way that they did with some CFLs? That would be a little more environmentally responsible.
 
If the bulb life is around 20 years in normal use and the additional components are minimal it would seem the benefits of controlling the bulbs and their individual energy use would by far out pace any landfill concerns. Not to discount the idea that we should minimize as much impact as possible but how many cell phones and iPods will a person go through in that same amount of time? I did see the Google bulbs at a distance at LightFair and I have read several press releases. The heat sink is slightly different in that it has a twist and is silver instead of the white paint like the LSG at HD.
 
PhotonWrangler & deadrx7conv seem to get what these bulbs are about, although the emitters themselves may turn out to be anything but dumb.

On the surface, Google's Android powered light bulbs may seem like an amusing gimmick, and at least for the time being, on the everyday consumer level they are but they are definitely part of the wave of the future of lighting.

When we go shopping for an Edison based 120V screw-in LED lamp it is easy to forget that LEDs are low voltage surface mount electronic components that have been adapted to function over AC lines and thus are more ideally suited for use in networked systems. In the future, networked LED lighting systems will be fully integrated into the construction of commercial and eventually residential buildings as well. In fact, smart networked lighting will probably be fully integrated with intelligent heating and cooling systems as part of a holistic energy management package and this will provide dramatic energy savings.

These kind of networked lighting systems (both hard wired and wireless) are already in development. Here's a good article about it.

But wait, there's more! Research has been underway for several years now to integrate wireless digital communications with interior (and exterior) LED lighting systems that can transmit and receive data, (more) thereby creating wireless hotspots as part of the lighting system. I don't think it would be long 'til we see this integrated with the above mentioned technologies.

Sure hope they design these systems to be pretty hacker proof although line of sight communications may have some benefits in that regard but it remains to be seen how secure large LANs or WANs will be. As far a high frequency LED light switching for digital communications is concerned I can already hear the complaints about health issues such as migraines, etc.

There are two arguments on the A19 replacement that pop up: The whole fixture should be replaced with an optimized integrated solution (or designed in in the first place); or there's billions of E26/27 sockets that already exist and are not likely to be replaced any time soon. My two cents is that there is room in the market for both and that there will a long period of transition before a long term market winner is selected. How many people are rushing out to replace all of their bulbs with LED? The last numbers I saw were about 2% of the market and growing but really not many. Now up the price to replacement of the entire fixture and how will that speed implementation? Again, just my opinion but transition will take a while and a smart A19 is reasonable interum technology. Too bad the LSG bulb is regularly priced at $35. If it were a $15 bulb it would be a killer.
 
I think, from a sustainability standpoint, one if the big opportunities is to eliminate switches and wiring altogether. Obviously this has the most impact in new construction, but I imagine they are thinking decades ahead. Have to start somewhere :)

Combine that with gestural interface and you can just walk into a room and point at a light to turn it on or off.

Speaking of low cost A19 Led replacement bulbs - here is a post of mine that this system failed to process the other day. Toshiba and Samsung will be following suit. Sure - it's only a 40 watt equivalent - but next year it will be a 60 watt equivalent.

LG announced a series of low(er) cost LED Bulbs.

The only reason I am posting this is that current retail price in Korea is just under $13 US. I have absolutely no idea how this retail will translate when the product lands in US stores but the bulb is already available(sort of) on Ebay for $19.99. I am hoping LG's aggressive pricing will force the other major player to follow suit.
Personally, I think LG screwed up by making this a non dimmable bulb. Hopefully a dimmable version is in the works.
