Got my Pt Surge today.Man this things bright!I didn't like the beam pattern so I put writeright on the lens and it really smoothed out the beam.Very satisfied.

It's the semi-clear sheet that you can put over a PDA screen to keep it from getting scratched. It's almost like that "contact paper" that your mom used to line the kitchen shelves with.

I think the light will be quite diffused. Most likely you might loose some density in the light.

I could be wrong but when there is dust on my surge lens
I can smell it burning off. (my imagination ?)

I would be afraid of the writeright fusing to the lens

Got one of those. Unfortunately its one of those rotten batch with all sorts of early design problems. No matter now. PT has decided to send me a new one. Can't wait to try them.

The only downside of using 8 AAs is that when one or two of the batteries starts to die, it turns the entire light output yellowish. Once you replace that one or two batteries, everything is bright again.

For it to go yellowish, it has to be at least two dyeing batteries because the surge runs on two set of four batteries.

Beside, what I found is that when one battery start to go, the rest of the battery are about 5% capacity left in them which is about time to put them in LED lights.

According to Princeton Tec's web site, it's 3 to 5 hours. Probably 3 hours of full light and 2 trailling hours of dimmer light?
