The longest lasting NiMhs I've used have been GPs, but alas, my 1600 mAh ones have crapped out. Where can I find replacements? Also, what are my options with non eneloop AAs?

Here in Europe, GP is is a very popular brand. The interesting thing about them is that they still sell their lower capacity cells. I've seen 1300 and 1800 mAh AA cells in the shops quite cheap. I used to have a set of 2000 mAh cells and they were OK, but nothing special. Compared to Sanyo cells they are not that well matched. Typically, you can expect up to 10 % capacity variations among cells from the same pack. Frankly, I'd get Sanyo.

I also have three GP 1800mAh cells that just keep going - great shelf life with very low self discharge. (Mind you, the 4th cell in that set died shortly after I got them.) But having used Eneloops for a bit I'll only be buying them now. Why do you specify non-Eneloop options?

Hmm, I was considering Sanyo 2700s, but I'm worried about fast degradation of the self discharge rate.

I wanted something that would handle hire current draws, unless Eneloops are good at that. Also, sometimes, I want that extra oomph from the extra 700mAh if I'm out on a photography trip or something

The Eneloops handle high currents quite well. Unless you really need the extra capacity and will use your cells up to a week after charging, Eneloops are better.
