Kathmandu in Melbourne is having a 50% off for the so-called Rayovac 3 LED 300 lumen lantern (their badge is Basecamp lantern). The sale price is A$39.95 so it's similar to US price of US$ 27.
I just got one and probably will grab few more for my brother. The sale will last 6 weeks as I was told.

Hmm there's two stores in Adelaide, I wonder if either of those would have any in stock.
Now off to research if these lanterns are any good....

Didn't take too close of a look but a very similar lantern from aussie disposals uses 3 nichia regals.

i just bought one today
Very impressed.
The best thing about this is that you can take the large diffusive lens off with a twist and use it as a normal light (bare bulb) its excellent in this mode and ill be using this mode for 99% of the time
It is very bright.
Its similiar to the rimus Nova Max (3x1 watt LED, 300 lumens,) selling at Aust army disposals for 60$ with a few differences.

Dont know which one is outright better of the 2 havent used Nova max.

So far its a keep.
The shop has a policy you can return the goods in 21 days the store said, so you really cant go wrong

I bought some 2xAA to D converters off DealExtreme a while back so didn't have to splash out on un-cost effective D cells. Just today I was thinking about the weight savings of LED illumination compared to gas. The only thing missing (apart from equivalent brightness) is some sort of pole to mount LED lanterns on. I wonder if there is a powerful side-emitting LED available as it could make the light distribution more even.
