Has anyone put an LED in a solitaire?

Help Support Candle Power:

This one is for Brad. I used 3 of the 12v batts in a 2 AAA Eveready penlight with 330 ohms of resistance built into the 5600 nichia "bulb". It works ok, but those little 12v batteries must have a lot of internal resistance. They can't keep up. after 20 minutes or so they need some recovery time. I only got about 8 hours total out of them in this setup.

I haven't got around to my solitaire's yet, but you guys are sure doing a great job brainstorming! Thanks!

John

Here is a shot of the Solitaire with a 12 volt battery. No resistor. Using the Turquoise LED I pulled out of my Photon II when I replaced it with a white 5600 LED.
Here is the light output of the Turquoise Solitaire next to the white Photon II. Both have good batteries.

I have three issues with the single LED Solitare conversion to overcome:

1) The LED deforms the plastic lens slightly when turning off the light. Not a big deal, but I can't guess the effect over time.

2) As a direct effect from the pressure applied to the LED, after MANY on/off repitions, the torque caused one of the LED leads to break off right at the resin. I now only use CHEAP LED's in the Solitare.

Since I just finished doing this mod, I was wondering if you ever found any answers for either of the above problems. If so, could you post them either here or my recent Solitaire mod thread URL=http://www.candlepowerforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000277]here[/URL]. Thanks!

Oooo, nice bit of grave-digging, sir! Sorry, I don`t have the answers you seek, but I felt like adding a little something here if only because that first post of mine up there with the pictures in was my first ever post on this here site

How times have changed. I never really did get into the whole Modification thing after my initial brief experimentations.

Nostalgia, dontcha just love it?

Has anyone tried 3 series-wired 3mm LEDs with the 12v? I think they would fit in the head, you'd have to make a little board. Jbechto, could you test-fit some, just holding them to see if the head is wide enough?

I'm guessing you'd get more runtime this way.

I think an LED conversion kit for the 2AAA Maglite would be more handy. The 2AAA Maglite has a larger head and more battery capacity than the Solitaire, and it "feels" a little better built. Plus, the Arc AAA is actually smaller than the Solitaire...not to mention the Arc is much better built.

On the other hand, the 2AAA Maglite, having 2 AAA cells (more battery capacity) and slightly better optics than the Solitaire would seem to me a better candidate for an LED conversion.

Just IMO. YMMV

You can build a Satcure or ZLT circuit right into the space for the bulb holder and have a "candle mode enabled" LED Solitaire running from a single AAA battery. If you use 3mm Nichias you don't even need to drill the reflector. A crude first generation model can be seen here
