Looking to buy a headlamp for my dad for Christmas. He has a cheap headlamp he got from home depot that he says isn't very bright.

For his job he's often going into unlit or dimly lit rooms with sleeping patients. He has to be able to see around the room and read labels and forms as well as check the patients arms/legs etc.. for wounds.

He has seen my Olight S10 Baton and really liked its output on both low and high settings. He said, "if only i could strap this to my head."

So basically a light similar to the Olight S10 but in headlamp form.

Also, he's often wearing sterile gloves and therefore cannot adjust the direction of the lamp/brightness once he's in the room. It would be nice if there was a lamp that would be not too hard to adjust using the side of one's arm/change brightness.

Cost: less than $70

Maybe a Zebralight headlamp? If he's working with sleeping patients, something with decent focus and low output should work. What kind of batteries does he prefer?

The Zebralight H502 is a full flood light with a headlamp strap, so where it's pointed doesn't affect the beam too much. The beam could be too wide though, and cause light to shine into patient's eyes. The H51 has a more focused beam with a hotspot and could work, and the H51F is kinda between the H502 and H51. A neutral white or high CRI LED could also be better for providing more natural colors compared with a cool white LED.

Zebralight's UI could be a bit complex for non hobbyists though, and they might not be that easy to adjust with just an arm.

Spark's Headlamps could also work.

Zebralight is always a good option, but if he is not into flashlight/headlamp; it might be a bit confusing with 8-10 mode...

There are:

Fenix HL21 (1 AA) 3 mode + 1 hidden strobe ~$35

IRIX I and II (1 AA) infinite variable. (IRIX II is currently on sale. Go to marketplace and go to "Good deals" and look for my post.) it's ~$15 shipped.

Spark headlamp are good, but quite pricey.

Try not to get 3AA or 3AAA, it's a bit too bulky for him IMO.

I can Highly recommend the Black Diamond Storm. Has a great spot light and a great flood light. Only has one button to push on top and you can hold the button to infinately lower either spot or flood mode. Also is water proof. The light also has strobe mode and red LEDs if needed. These are just super nice lights and is currently around $40 (on Amazon). This is a light for serious mountain climbers and is highly praised. Also there are other cheaper models in their line-up you might want to check out with less throw from the spot.
Here's some info from their website:
1 TriplePower LED, 2 SinglePower White LEDs and 2 SinglePower red LEDs emit 100 lumens (max power)
Red night vision mode activates without cycling through white mode
Sleek low-profile design uses 4 AAA batteries
Settings include full strength in proximity and distance modes, dimming, strobe, red night vision and lock mode
Three-level power meter shows remaining battery life for 3 seconds after switching on headlamp
Protected against water immersion down to 1 m (3.3 ft) for 30 minutes (IPX 7)

I am thinking stay with a one AA cell headlamp for comfort. Smaller, lighter, brighter and run a long time. Easy to find one AA cell anytime you need one in a TV remote, or keep a few in a charger. Gunner12s

idea to use Zebralight is good. You can change the direction of the light easy enough with a arm, but not the brightness. No where near as bright as your Olight S10 Baton. But too bright for what he will be doing.
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/member.php?22800-Gunner12 Yours runs 320 lms on top, 70 lms, 5 lms, and 1/2 lms. The H502 AA Headlamp, only runs up to 260 on top, but it has a usable 50 lms, 25 lms and 12 lms in the middle, and will go way lower than .05 lms on low. To me it seems even the Zebralight .01 lms (1/10) is too bright once your eyes adjust to the dark. 1/2 lms would never do for me when I do not want to wake anyone up.

So recently I bought my first good quality torch, the foursevens qta. Then I thought, I've had enough with using my black diamond spot and buying batteries for it. Two options, buy a AAA recharging kit or get another good headlamp that uses AA. I decided to focus my battery usage around AA. For some reason Zebralight and Fenix headlamps where not available from the guy where I got my torch, then he offered me the fenix headband kit. Mulled over it for days then took the plunge. Read about it. It will only fit torches that have an outer diameter of 18 - 22mm. A bit narrow but a lot of torches sport that size. The Foursevens QTA fits and the torch has a moonlight mode which is nice if you need a light that doesn't disturb others. Not exactly a torch recommendation but hell, but if you have it, you can choose a good light that you can strap on to your head!
