I’ve been running this headlamp for rescue missions and mountaineering called the Black Diamond Spaceshot:

Black Diamond headlamps

It runs a super bright l.e.d. on a 6 volt lithium through a separate system so I can change the 6 - AA’s powering the long life xenon bulb, (gives about 7.5 hours burn time), while using the led. Any ideas on how much more burn time I can get if I run 6 D cells? Is it comparable to the 9.7 volt N.M.H. I can pick up from Black Diamond, (11 hour burn time)? Do I have to change the bulb due to the Amp change or is it insignificant?

In rough terms, a D cell of same chemistry should have about 4-7 times the capacity of an AA cell.

6 Alkaline D's should work fine, would be putting out 9 volts. My bet would be at least 4 times more run time than Alkaline AA's.

That looks like a pretty cool light!
