Heavy Duty Fixed Blade Multi Tool?

Day before yesterday my trusty Buck X tract just about filleted my thumb when I was using it. Pretty sure it was my fault, don't blame the knife or company. As I have used it many times before for the same thing, didn't think twice about cutting a hole in a mudflap to hang it till I could get to a shop and get it repaired. In the past, made four cuts, popped out the rubber square, and had my hole. This time, on the fourth cut, the blade broke about a half inch from the tip causing a small slip. I believe i hit the locking mechanism when it slipped forward causing it to close on my thumb. Dumb mistakes on my part, but still kinda lost faith/interest in the knife. Its now a buddies who wanted it, and I guess will just regrind the tip, dunno.

So after that short who/what/why, I am looking for a fixed blade multitool of some sort. Mainly for cutting, possible seat belt cutting, prying, and sometimes screwing stuff in. Stabbing would be nice, hehe for said mudflaps. Ive seen them before, need pointed in the right direction. Also just read about the Extrema Ratio RAO, with its locking pin, might consider that too. Tough is much preferred over any other factor. Light is not something I want. Heheh I am odd in that I do not like light things, be they knives, flashlights or most other things for that matter. Heavy is fine by me.

Ok, took a bit longer than I thought. Found some custom makers, Atwood, Fud, Frog , JdR and others. Looks like I may have to have one made to compliment the Extrema I picked up. If interested can look them up or can link this weekend. Most found on multitool(dot)org.

The Esee HEST was a consideration. I think the HEST is a superior general purpose tool for home/camp use. But don't think it will help pry open a stuck semi trailer door, or hammer a latch closed. For what I need the Tac Tool is perfect.

Anyone know a good Ka-Bar dealer that has a BK3 in stock or can get it reasonably?

Still buying an Extrema RAO 185, but that's later, as now I want this. Be a good companion to my Blaster NG.

how about a small 3" fixed blade knife for that type of use.And keep the Extract for everyhting else.

The Xtract is already gone. Hope it serves him as well as it did me....he will undoubtedly use it wiser than I did.

For a knife, I'm getting the RAO for GP use. For work, the tactool is almost perfect for blunt nasty jobs. Cutting mudflaps, hammering stubborn trailer latches, cutting air lines, removing tire debris from a busted tire. All stuff that tends to happen in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. My blaster and this are a damn near perfect combo to be working in the snow, ice, grease and muck.


I figure we all have an idea of something to make a perfect knife as I do too. But I think this will do.

Hehe, and to get a knifemaker to build what I want.....prob buy a whole set of sebenzas, ERs and spydecos.

Not sure if flashaholic (would it be knifeaholic?) syndrome affected my final decision but....

For my birthday, I am being given a Esee HEST by my family, for which ive ordered a Gerber Shard that ill attach via lanyard.

Ive got a local dealer that will get my KaBar BK3 for me as soon as my case is settled with the ebay affair and the fake Extrema knife. The refund check bounced. Yay. Once thats settled, the BK3 is mine.

But in the end, ill have them both, the HEST and the TacTool. Plan on getting a couple Atwoods, or other nice custom tools to attach to the HEST and the TacTool later. The shard will do till then. BK3 in my semi as my work took, and the HEST as my EDC. Then the RAO 185 will be ordered after the others arrive, well, simply because I want one. Now its just waiting for them all to arrive. Ill put pics up when the collection is ready.

HEST arrived while I was at work. Woohoo, gotta say, far more impressive in hand than the pics. Pics do not really do it justice. The blade is alot thicker than I thought it was, much better for prying. The handles have a good grip, and are already hollowed out somewhat, so my plan on putting a sharpening tool of some sort in there will be simpler. The kydex sheath is pretty slick too, holds tight, and the blade won't come out unless pulled. Was worried at first about no safety catch or tie down of some sort, now I see why. The lanyard is just a short piece of paracord, but since my wife is making one out of desert camo paracord for me, thats covered anyway. Not so impressed with the Gerber shard. Its a decent little pry tool/bottle opener and the phillips head isn't to bad. But the flathead screwdriver tips are to thick. Nothing a dremel or file won't fix, cept it will mess up the paint. Ill do pics today sometime.
