The original series of radios and lantern were from Baygen, which is now Freeplay. Try a google search or go to Sharper Image or ccrane.com as I know those two carried them.

Spring steel is readily available, the big challenge is to convert the potential kinetic energy to stored electrical power... Maybe check out bicycle generators? I've used one with very low drag, so maybe there is an easy solution?
