HELP, HELP Squid\'s opalec newbeam not working

Hi Mike:

Opalec received in today's mail. However, it's not functioning. I've tried new batteries, and have taken it apart and put it back together several times, but to no avail. Please advise.

First, glad you got it... Was the opalec module installed or not. I don't remember. They are polarity specific so try reversing the way it plugs in. put the kroll clickie switch on it an give it a click or two. if the head is screwed down too tight it will break the contact of the module and it will not light (much like the standard minimag works) let me know

I will open up a thread in LED...
Lets ask for suggestions... the only other thing that i can think of is the little black piece that is OEM standard where you plug the module in does it have two pieces of metal in it where the leads plug in one should track over to the barrel and then the postive should go down in to touch the pos nipple of the battery...

don't worry dan I WILL make this right one way or another... Please DO NOT WORRY

If I have to I will send you new parts.

I doubt VERY seriously there is anything wrong with the newbeam itslelf.


Do you guys have any other suggestions on getting this to work?

I traded this light to Squid and it worked fine when I packed it up... promise!!

Can he try a bi-pin bulb in the MiniMag? This will tell if the connections are good and if he still has those tiny parts in his MiniMag.

Dan, here's a pic showing the tiny metal contacts directly below the part that says "Do Not Remove" make sure both positive and negative contacts are in place.

PS. good suggestion by Vikas

, you don't need to check these connections if the original Mag bulb works

I just checked the post office web site and it doesn't cost much to send a letter to the US, if you only need the metal contacts PM me your address and I will send them to you at no charge (well it is Christmas

Either have him send me an SASE (you should have my address) and I will tape the contacts to a piece of card weight paper and mail them to him. Or, if you have his address handy, email it to me and I will get them sent out..

I am going to be out of town (away from any computers) so I won't be able respond until next week Monday. If you can forward this info to him, or email me his addy, it would be about the quickest way to handle this due to my being away...

what kind of digital camera do you have? I've got one, only 2 MP, no optical zoom. I'm thinking about an "affordable" upgrade to allow me to snap quick pics as you did above. Your's seems to do a good job. Appreciate your comments!

Ahahhhh...I think I've found the culprit. It would seem that I'm missing one of the metal contacts. Any idea on how I can go about getting one?

Anyone who's bought a Madmax or Badboy sandwich from dat2zip will have some spares (as they are replaced by the drop in module)

I would happily offer my spares but sending them to the US would probably cost more than buying them from the manufacturer.

It's a Olympus C-40, 4 MP, 2.8x optical & 2.5x digital zoom.

Go here for a review of the camera.

So far I've been very happy with this camera, it has a multitude of modes and settings to adjust, but I normally leave it set on AUTO and get pretty good results.

Only downside is the fact that it doesn't come with a rechargeable battery or A/C adaptor (1x CR-V3 3v lithium is supplied).

2x AA batteries can be used but alkalines only last a short time, I've recently bought some high capacity NiMh batteries and they seem to fair a little better.

I had expected to leave town late last night, but got held up due to bad weather, so I had the chance to check my email for an update and got the needed info. Otherwise, had I missed checking mail, it would have been quicker via sase.

I'll be mailing the contacts out with my bills today when I leave town. I didn't know which one was needed, so am sending both. The + contact will need to have the tab (that touches the battery) folded back over after insertion. They are in a small bag taped to a piece of card-weight stock, so hopefully the PO won't mash them.

Squid - I emailed to the address you have in your profile but it came back as "invalid", so I tried it without the underscore.
