My first 'grown up' light arrived today. A Quark 123 tactical. I had no idea what to expect, but I have to say, I'm completely blown away by both the size, and the sheer volume of light out of such a tiny package.
I wanted a single CR123 light for my first because I wanted that high power-to-light ratio. Of course, no sooner had I ordered it than I started experiencing buyers remorse. CR123 batteries are hard to get hold of sometimes. You might end up spending a fortune at Tesco's or Sainsbury's, whereas if you'd bought something that ran on AA or AAA's, you wouldn't be lightless.
Well, that's easily addressed, right? I'll just buy another light. Xmas is coming. Wife and kids both need to buy me a Xmas present -- but I need to select one.
Initially, I was thinking of a very small AAA like the Fenix L01 or L05, so I'd have something to carry on my keys and could use that as an EDC. But my Quark is quite small enough to use as an EDC -- keys or no keys.
So what do I need from this next light? Something small and carriable. Must use AA's or AAA's. Prefer a single cell to a multi-cell light, but it isn't a deal-breaker.
Secondly, the aesthetics of the light are very important to me as well. (I'm not yet sufficiently addicted enough to start chasing custom built titanium lights so don't even go there.) I want a good looking, functional light.
What's in the frame at the moment?
-- Quark Prion 2 (in Tactical Black) -- I love the look and power of this light -- so much in such a small package!
-- Streamlight Stylus Pro -- also nice, but totally lacks the power of the Prion
-- Zebralight SC50+ -- Great output, love that it can be used as a headlamp, but not totally sold on the aesthetics of the design. I'd need to see one in real life
-- Sunwayman M10R -- like the idea of the magnetic controls, but I've seen some critical comments around the build quality of these.
-- Surefire 6PL -- or should I go for a cheaper incandescent and pop in a Malkoff unit at a later date? Wait, this isn't an AA light is it? Ah, who cares. Daddy want Lego!
