I am a true Novice in the flashlight world. So I am looking for your help. I am looking for a flashlight to use when traveling at night by boat to spot the navigation buoys in the river. I would like something under a $100 not terribly large and batteries that are easy to obtain. I am not sure about anything rechargable. I want to put it in the boat and have it ready when I need it and not worry about recharging after each use. I don't want to roast marshmellows or burn paper with my flashlight. I have been researching on the internet but become more confused everytime I look. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Are buoys reflective? How is the visibility? How far away are you trying to spot them? What is your budget? Should the light be helpful for anything else?

Are you open to Li-ion rechargeable batteries? If not, what kind of batteries do you prefer? How big is too big? How much throw? Do you need instant on? Is color rendering important?

The Fenix E40 is a nice small thrower that runs on 4 AA batteries, but I'm not sure if it'll throw enough.

Something small, so you can hold it next to your head [eye] to see the retroreflective markers.
If you can wait, Cree has a new LED called the xp-e2, which should make some kick-butt little throwing lights.
