Years ago on a trip to Epcot @ disneyworld I saw some very unique rechargeable cells. Possibly you have seen them and know where I can get some. They were D cells and considering the time frame, most likely nicd. There was a solar cell built into the battery itself. Cool huh!

Anybody?

That sounds like one of those things they display in "World of Tomorrow" style exhibits -- rocket backbacks that enable a man to fly (for ten seconds before running out of fuel), a D battery with a solar cell built right into it that can charge it up (in about a month of continuous full sunlight) ...

Wait -- an idea just struck me. They have flexible solar cells now that can be rolled up. I think it might actually be workable to take the D cells out of your flashlight, unroll the solar cells they're wrapped in (revealing they're actually C cells, but that's okay) -- unroll the solar cells and expose them to the sun all day and run the flashlight all night? That would not only be cool, it might even be practical. It would be even more practical to wrap the solar cell around the outside of the flashlight body, though.

Actually it woul be quite possible to make one. Take a transparent D size case. Put a C cell in it. You then have a good bit of left over room to mount solar cells and the appropriate electronics.

Maybe my point wasn't clear.... Unless you unroll a flexible solar cell with a lot more area than a D cell, it's going to take a very long time for that tiny solar cell to charge up a D cell. A solar cell needs much more area than a D cell to absorb enough sunlight to produce a useful amount of electricity.

I could wave it around, that way the cell will absorb sunlight more rapidly. Also, I would mount a fan on it and then it could generate electricity from the wind also!
