Hi. I thought i lost my flashlight (a SL scorpion) with a pila protected lithium ion battery in it before i headed to ohio for winter break. So i didnt bring my charger. I would like to be able to charge it, but not damage the battery or protection in it. Is there anyway i can temperarorly charge the battery untill i get back to new york?

also, last time i was up here, i think i left a pila in the garage. my garage is not heated. So it was in the cold from thanksgiving till now or so. If i happen to find it, will it be damaged from the cold weather? Because i dont want to look for it if i find it and it will not work /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif thanks if anyone can help me.

Hello Polar Hops,

Interesting situation...

I don't think the cold will do any damage to your garaged cell.

To charge your cell that you have with you, will require a 4.6 volt power source. Perhaps you could give Jon Burley a call and get another charger. Another option is to send my your cell and I could charge it for you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good luck.

Thanks! for offering to charge it for me.

4.6 volts? the cell is 3.6 volts... it's running low. and i just came up here for the holidays, the charger is still in new york, where i am going after my break is over. are you sureeee it's 4.6 volts? i do have a variable dc power supply. how will i know when it's charged? by checking the resistance? what if i dont stop charging it after it is charged? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If it is a protected cell, it should stop charging by itself. I checked my pila charger and it reads 4.56v open circuit. I'd set it for about 4.4 volts and keep and eye on it.

how much current should i set it at?
thanks again. (i think i can only set it for 1 or 10 amps), i'm not sure. I'm going to see if my dad took it up yet.

my friend's scorpion takex 2x123s. couldnt you just pick up a few of those and not worry about it?

Hello Polar Hops,

The output on the Pila charger is listed as 4.6 v 1.5 amps. You could set your power supply according to that and then keep an eye on it. If the cell gets hot, take it off. They will get a little warm, but not hot.

It will probably take 2-3 hours to recharge.

The protection circuit will protect the cell and seems to be quite good at doing it. I tried to charge a Pila at 8.4 volts (wrong setting in my charger, had a brain fart... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ) and it shut off at 4.2 volts and the cell has worked fine in spite of my efforts to kill it.

I'd have to get a new bulb too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'll just use my R123s for that, since i ripped my nuwai in half trying to open it.
