If anyone read my recent update to My first mod , you know that I just traded my arm and part of my leg /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif for a new Fluke 189, now I can log as much data as I can stand and then upload it to my computer.

That's nice, but I need to monitor temp. also. So I'm sure someone out there has used both a contact temp. probe (I have) and/or an infrared temp. probe (I have not). I'm leaning toward the 80T-IR....Any sugestions?

I wonder if the IR model will let me get a reading close to the die? Temp, and data logging, sounds like I'll be able to rate different types of heat sinks!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

If the IR probe will give a usefull reading of the die or a surface very close to it (one with a Delta T proportional to the die T) and a temp reading on the heat sink itself, then I think we might have some usefull info?!?

I just might have to dust off my HP48GX and dig up my old thermo textook. Or I could just post the raw data and let someone smarter than me crunch the numbers....

Yeah, that's why I switched majors after 3 years from Mech Eng to Avation Mngmt.
 
Remember, when using a IR meter to measure temperature, you must take into account the Emissivity of the object you are measuring

Even thou two materials are heated to the same temperature, Emissivity will make the IR meter read two different values

Thought I was the only one here old enough to have owned a HP-35. That's the origional electronic slide rule is'nt it? I remember that it cost $395 and had to be ordered directly from HP!

I have two 15Cs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif . My first was a 45.

And INRETECH is right about emissivity- IR sensors have to be calibrated to what they will be looking at.

My current Hp is the 11C!
Wore out two battery packs on the HP35..it used a Nicad battery pack.
