[Lighthouse]

Hi all,

D’oh! (To the third power!) Our dog knocked my wife’s Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop off the table. Before anyone asks, yes we still have the dog. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The post crash inspection revealed that the 14” color LCD monitor is now spider webbed with cracks.

No problem I said (yeah right) and we’ve been doing Google & Froogle searches since trying to locate a monitor to buy. What we’ve found so far (yep, you guessed) is that the monitors /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif co$t as much or more that buying a new or refurbished laptop. At this point, I’m /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif that our best bet is to locate a used monitor from a brain dead laptop (minor cosmetic scratches etc. would probably be acceptable depending of severity.

Recognizing that there is a wide variety of experience, interests and backgrounds on this forum, I was wondering if there any CPF’s that might have (or have a lead on) a dead Tecra 8000 but with a reusable 14” color monitor and/or only the monitor for replacement that might be acquire? (I recognize that this may be /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif chasing the unobtainable /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dedhorse.gif , however I am reluctant to drop that much money into the project only to find an acquaintance say, hey, why didn’t you ask me?

At this point, we’ve been running for a while using a regular CRT and keeping the laptop at home (which is not always convenient). Over the years we’ve performed various upgrades to this unit and have been pleased with the performance. While not the fastest machine in the house, it works well for us and is nice for taking to classes and trips.

Have you checked e-bay?

You might be able to find a Tecra 8000 for sale cheaper than a screen replacement.

Thanks for the FAAASSSST response and tips... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif we'd not even considered that possibility. I cruised around ebay and did several searches after reading your posts, this may be the answer, we're going to keep looking around and try to get a better feel for proceeding since we have not utilized ebay yet (hmmm...anything special that we should watch out for when using ebay?)...thankfully, we are not in a massive rush to get the parts so we can spend time doing comparisons.

if you take apart the lid and remove the lcd itself you will find a label.
i need the brand and model of the lcd itself.
i may have a good pull from a scrapped laptop.

You could just get a new laptop. I know you said you still like this one, but I think you'd be amazed at how much laptops have come along /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Do as snakebite said and open it up, Sony, Sharp, Sanyo are the three most popular lcd panel makers I have seen and they are used in a lot of laptops so you may be able to find one in something besides another Tecra 8000. Ebay also seems to be a decent choice, I have seen replacement LCD panels for my laptop for under $100. Browse to computers/laptops/laptop parts then search by your model in title and descriptions as a lot of times they list the different models in the description. Keep watching for a couple weeks to a month, I picked up a spare keyboard for mine for $7 and a hdd tray for $10 by being patient.

Saaby: As is often the case, you are correct and the subject has been kicked around the "Lighthousehold" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif For the time being, we're still leaning towards the LCD replacement for "sentimental reasons".

Eugene: Gonna open it up in a few minutes ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif provided I can figure out how. LOL )

You are right, in cruising ebay I noticed that there seemed to be some "cross pollenation" of parts by various manufacturers & I'll definitely try your search suggestions.

the screws are often hidden under the rubber bumpers.
then you have to seperate the case halves by getting a sharp knife in between.
carefully work around unhooking the clips.dont slip and cut yourself with the knife!
