Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

Do GMRS radios and their European PMR equivalent use the same frequencies?

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

GMRS radio license is $75 - I have one. Good for 5 years.

You should get one.

You should also be very careful about using them in a foreign country. Many countries don't allow them and in these days of terrorist hunting, you could have a whole lot of explaining to do - so a pissed off security guy whose English is not all that good.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

Sounds like Mic's already made his mind up on this. I've got a ham license and with 5-7watts of output on a handheld I'm happy. I spent about 2 hours taking sample tests online and paid close to $10 in processing fees to get the license.
With ham radio there's also the added benefit of a repeater network across CONUS and in Europe too. I've taken my radios overseas and used them all legally across Europe with a U.S. license.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

I recall seeing a list somewhere. I think a lot of Asian countries do not have such a freq band set aside.

EU stuff is probably pretty consistent as the list above seems to indicate.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

I thought that GMRS was free, my mistake. And since we are the ones training the local security forces, I'm not worried about them trying to fine me too much.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

It is not the LEO's that would fine you, it would be the FCC. Granted the probability of getitng fined is small but you really should have a license especially if you are using them for commercial purposes (i.e. training).

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

Um dude, look at my location.

We first bought these to use as squad radios when we thought we'd be doing some real missions in Iraq. Mostly now they just sit in our lockers. We were going to use them on some of our reaction teams, but some vehicle radios were found so that helped to alleviate the radio chortage we had.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the FCC. I'm more worried about losing my head (literally , but thankfully the odds are that I'll get hit by lightning) than the FCC. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

what happens if you operate without a gmrs license for private use?

[/ QUOTE ]

If you keep it simple, don't use foul language, or start a poop storm, probably nothing. This however DOES NOT make it right, and I am not advocating use without a license. Keep in mind that the FCC has some new equipment now that can pinpoint your transmission, and reception fairly quickly, and accurately. Of a greater concern to them however are illegal radio stations being setup for specific programing.

Re: Help with 2 way radio\'s

Folks, I'm going to Mexico soon. Is there a way to find out if either FRS or GMRS radios are legal for me to use there?

Folks, I'm going to Mexico soon. Is there a convenient way to find out if either FRS or GMRS radios are legal for me to use there? A site for radio buffs that summarizes laws and is relatively up to date? thanks in advance

GMRS licenses cost $75 last time I looked.

You're right, it's $75 for a license, the license is good for 5 years, and it covers your entire immediately family.

In my experience though, the 2 watt GMRS are no better than the 1/2 watt FRS. All were bubble packs though, not high quality GMRS radios.

I've got a bunch of different models here...Cobra, Motorola, Audiovox, Bell South....My favorite are the old Motorola and the Cobra. I find the scan feature to be a nice thing to have. Put it in your car and see what shows up. Lots of interesting conversations.

I have a couple of FRS radios that were only $5 after rebate. Sometime when I get time I'm going to pop them open, remove the stock antenna and solder on a BNC connector and see what I can do with a better antenna.

Lenny,
FRS radios are ONLY legal when used with the "stock" antenna - which is why you will NOT find one made with a removeable antenna - the FRS spec talks about ERP - Effective Radiated Power - a gain antenna (or should I say one with LESS loss) puts the units over the ERP limit

(Now the question - do I change my user name to match my new call sign - KG2V?)
