I've decided to ditch my cheap Li-Ion charger, take the plunge and pick up a hobby charger. Now I'm lost; seems these guys have their own language.

This may be a dumb question, but what on earth does "LiLo" mean? LiPo was fairly intuitive, lithium polymer, "Life" I take to mean lithium iron phosphate, but LiLo has got be stumped. And if I grab an old 18650 from my garage, source unknown, how's a guy supposed to know whether I should use the LiLo or LiPo setting? Lithium iron phosphate at least I can rule out since I know what they're talking about.

And what's with this "4S" stuff? From context I gather that means 4 cells, but why the 'S'? It is just that they didn't want to confuse the kiddies with 4Cells vs. a 4C (dis)charge rate? Or is the average hobbyist spelling-challenged? (j/k to all you RC'ers out there) :D

It's actually "LiIo" meaning lithium ion. Also, you normally use the "LiPo" setting anymore for LiCo and LiMn Li-Ion cells, as they can be charged at 4.20 Volts nowadays. It used to be that LiCo cells were charged to 4.10 Volts. You can of course charge these chemistry cells at the "LiIo" setting (4.10 Volts) to extend their cycle life, but at the expense of their being only about 90% charged.

You seem to have the rest correct. 2S, 3S, 4S, etc. is how many cells you have in series ("s"). Keep in mind that when you charge lithium ion cells (LiCo, LiMn, and LiFe are all Li-Ion cells) in series, you need to correctly attach balancing leads. Nickel based cells can't be balance charged, so no problem there.

Really? So they just changed the I to an L? Nawwww it can't be that simple?

And there really is a second 'L' in there, I swear. All kinds of results for LiLo (not a typo on my part!). Hobbypartz has a whole section for "LiLo chargers". I'm just sitting here in disbelief. ;)

I also thought lithium polymer was charged exactly the same as plain-Jane Li-Ion, so LiPo was the setting you'd normally use for regular cells? (Ok yeah now re-reading your post it makes sense now... you can.)

And 4S == 4 in Series. Gotcha. Thanks!

... a possible explanation, but I think

that refers to "4sevens"

Unfortunate coincidence on my part, especially on this board. Nah, I was referring to the 2S/3S/4S/5S/6S nomenclature which seems only prevalent in the hobby world.

P.S. Love my Quark even with all of its quirks. ;)

hope you will play with the hobby charger with care

Insurance policy is paid up to date, the kitty has been through fire drills, and I've built a special charging station: The charger itself rests on cardboard and all of my expensive stuff which has a newer model out is stacked around the charger. :)

*wave to my ***** **** insurance agent who is quite probably a member! *
