I came upon this mod using what seems to be Welch Allyn's 10W HID lamp with what seems to be a Japanese built ballast. (If we have some members who read Japanese, perhaps he/she can translate the article for all the rest of us? I read Chinese, English and French but sadly not Japanese.) Ther is even a beam photo with the Surefire 9AN as reference. Website: http://homepage3.nifty.com/ledsurefire/starthp/subpage12.html What is very interesting is how the battery holders are made by cutting and gluing 2 AA cells holders. Enjoy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow, thats nice. And in the last shots it almost looks as though the beam is focusable? I had thought that I remembered reading around here that the Mag switch would melt at those power levels? If it can handle it then thats great. Or perhaps that was when running some even higher MR16 style bulbs, I can't remember.

The bulb and ballast look like the standard welch allyn "solarc" products. They also make one with the reflector as part of the bulb (like the p61 bulbs and such) which I've been eyeing myself. But the cost to entry is a bit high.

The solarc bulbs and ballasts have been around for a long time now, I'm a little confused as to why they aren't used more often in flashlights. They are expensive, but not really all that much more expensive than other things we spend our money on! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

is there another source (in a language i understand /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )you can purchase this kit from?

great mod!

thanks for the link.
what do you think of this light? Is it like a sure fire m6 or quite brighter?
does anyone plan to buy this kit?

check out the ongoing thread at "modified and homemade". I hope someone will create a group buy.

Do you have a complete light or just the body? I really want one of the complete HIDs.
Thanks,
John

makar, sure you can get them from walamp: http://www.walamp.com/iactive/index.html

Unfortunately in small quantities they are very expensive. You can buy a kit of 5 lamps and ballasts for $500 USD!

Oh, man. Those are sweet... the perfect thing for bike lights. Currently, bike lights from Light and Motion or Niterider using a 10watt HID run about $300.
Too bad we cant get about 100 people on a group buy for one of these at $40 each. I have $100 to throw at a project... I'd even go in with 4 others for
a developers kit . (PM me if any of you read this and are interested). It is way beyond my ability to start a mass group-buy, so if anyone else wants to start one, I'm in....
